This isn't a book that try to explain things in normal paragraphs and chapters. It's essentially a dictionary of different chemicals that you can look up and it offers their formula along with some interesting facts. Some entries are more detailed then others. If you ever wanted to look at an ingredients list on the back of a package and understand what the weird ones are, then this book will help. But it isn't something to just sit back and have a good read. At least not for most book lovers.

Enjoyed. May have talked down to us a bit, don't remember. Or maybe the font is too big? Don't remember.

At least it was interesting. Guess I recommend, but not strongly.

This is a good reference book for how and where chemicals are used in consumer products. I have some years experience in industrial chemistry, but not consumer products. I currently teach college chemistry. Being able to discuss the end use of chemicals to students helps them become engaged in the topics and hopefully helps them see that chemistry isn't just something that has to be studied, but it is something that we use continually in our daily lives. This book is written simply and easy to understand. One does not need any advanced chemistry degree to follow and comprehend. If you do have an advanced degree, it is still very useful and interesting.

I admit, I was expecting a little more exposition and a little less on the "blurbs".

Nevertheless, the book is informative. It covers a SWATH of those cryptic ingredients that we see on products, and explains what they are used for and why. (Sodium Benzoate, Propylene Glycol, Benzaldehyde, etc.) If you're a chemistry student / enthusiast you'll probably like this. The explanations of the properties are well-done, although at times it does read like an abridged MSDS ;)

That said, if you're expecting something more like a musing exploration of chemical additives, you're going to be disappointed. (If that's the case, you may find more joy in the likes of "The Carbon Age", or "Napoleon's Buttons", which deal specifically with entertaining narratives about chemicals and their histories).

This book would be best used as a shelf reference for those moments when you're reading the Ingredients list of a consumable and are REALLY curious about what some of them are used for. Pop open the book, find out, then put it back.

Interesting and well organized. For those who like to keep up with out ever changing environment near and far as are antifreeze and toothpaste both in the same sentence. Light enough reading but not necessarily for the beach.

I bought the Kindle version, which has the most horrible formatting possible. Section titles, subsection titles etc have all the same size, which is especially bad as the style of the book is a bit like a reference book. The formatting does everything it can to turn you off the topic. The print edition looks bad, but still has the same ....

... contents. It's like an abridged reference book. The title is intriguing, but just click bait. There are some introductions to sections (think soap, sweeteners, preservants,...), but these are rather short, matter of fact and do generally not contain anything that would spike further interest in the useful and fascinating topic of household chemicals. For the individual entries for the chemicals, Wikipedia articles are far superior in content, interesting facts, illustrations, formatting, and just about in any aspect you can imagine. Go there for a good read.

If you are interested in purchasing a book which can turn enthusiasts off an extremely engaging topic on the merits of contents alone, and witness
in horror how to add the worst aspects of a loveless (hateful may be a better word) conversion to an ebook, this is indeed money well spent.

My bf loved this as a gift. Its more like a thin reference book though, rather than a reading book which I was under the impression of. Its thorough and informative and not too dry either. I would give this again!

Very interesting little book. Some of the revelations made my hair stand on end. okay, not really, but it is an eye opener.

I thought this book would be more like a novel - something along the lines of Ben Goldacre's Bad Science. Turns out this is more like a text book/reference book.
The information is still quite interesting and well written - I was just expecting something I could read cover to cover.
