Review

"This book is raw and surprising. I'm hoping that many people will pick up this book. I read and reread it every year because it pulls at my heart. It is tragic but it's the truth and you can feel that when you read it." ---Suzanne Rickel

"
The True Story of Pocahontas is the first public publication of the Powhatan perspective that has been maintained and passed down from generation to generation within the Mattaponi Tribe, and the first written history of Pocahontas by her own people." —Audible/Tantor.

From the Publisher

For the first time in 400 years, the true story of Pocahontas is revealed by her own people. This important book shares the sacred and previously unpublished oral history of the Mattaponi tribe and their memories of 17th-century Jamestown that have been passed down from generation to generation.

This is probably one of the most important books I have ever gotten my hands on.

It's been said that we study history to learn from it, but "The True Story of Pocahontas" makes it clear that we as a nation have learned nothing. The book starts off with a beautiful letter from Mattaponi chief Carl "Lone Eagle" Custalow. The letter references the King William Reservoir Dam that threatened the water supply of the Mattaponi people a decade ago. Sounds scarily similar to today with the Dakota Pipeline!

The account of Pocahontas's life is a beautiful balance of history and culture. The writers weave between events in her life and the society and lifestyle surrounding the Powhatan people. This book was eye opening to how much our history clearly has wrong. The writers go out of their way to really combine their records of history with the evidence we have written and recorded. When there is a disagreement in what is written in English history, Custalow breaks down the situation very logically to ensure that each claim has support.

The writing is very simple and easy to follow, but simultaneously full of detail.

Not only would I recommend this book to a friend, but I would also advise every teacher to show this to their students. I would advise every American to read this.

I wish I could give more than five stars. I am so grateful to the Mattaponi people for sharing this history with us.

I bought both the paperback and kindle.
Ever since I watched the Disney film I read every book I could get my hands on and had enough information by high school to write my first term paper. However I couldn't ever find a native point of view source on her life. I couldn't find one from the voice of her own people, just the same western/English sources that repeated the same information. And then on Tumblr someone had done a post on this book. It took me a bit to get it and read it but, oh my days, it is such a good read! It is eye opening, beautifully written and so heartbreaking. The myth of Pocahontas falls away here and she and her people are made more of a living breathing human history than any other source or media portrayal ever has. I especially enjoyed learning more about her father, who before always seemed a stoic, distant and hard figure. But here you get all parts of him: a wise leader, a warm and loving father, and a deeply feeling man seemingly with his people’s world on his shoulders. I also have a close relationship with my father and reading about hers and her father and the aftermath of her capture and death cut deep.
Also learning part of the reason why the history had to be hidden for so long is chilling.
Whatever your level of interest in the subject, please read this book, let the true, long quiet voices be heard, and open your mind and heart to learning something new.

Fascinating oral history passed down by Pocahontas’ people. The notes, bibliography, and index lead the way to learning more about her and the Indigenous peoples of this area. I live not far from Werocomoco and look forward to learning more as the land is now a state park. Someday we’ll get more information about this important historical period.

Overall, a pretty good book. The area I’m from is pretty saturated with native culture, and while I am white, one of my closest friends is native and she’s taken me to powwows. That initial exposure piqued my interest. I think learning from history and other cultures is important and as a white person its my job to educate prejudice white people that may not otherwise listen to a non white person. This book is informative, but, it repeats its self a bit. I’m unsure if that’s just how indigenous story telling is, or more of the authors style. This would be helpful for someone that is forgetful or doesn’t have a ton of time to read so days go past between picking it up. The structure of the chapters is very nice as well! Forget everything you thought you knew about the story of Pocahontas, most of it is lies fabricated by the English to look good. I wish there was more detail though, this book is strictly the oral history in a written format. If you’re someone unacquainted with Powhatan culture you may need to do some googling as you go. (Ex. Where did quiakros come from? Were they born into this role or elected? Why did the quiakros not use their power to override the decisions of the chief?) It was worth the read for sure, but left me wishing for some more details.

I sadly also witnessed the prejudices of many people towards the Indians that lived on the reservations in Virginia.

The indigenous Elders of the Mayan who's say their Calender states that during these days "Truths will be revealed."
The Mayans calender was not one that followed physical objects but followed the evolution of consciouness.
This book is certaintly that. We need to rewrite much of our Histroy.
The Mattiponi intuitively knew that this was the time to write down the Oral

5.0 out of 5 stars There are many books titled "The True Story of Pocahontas", but this one is the only true story!
Reviewed in Germany on August 30, 2019
I have read a lot of books titled "The true story of Pocahontas", but unfortunately I resume that THIS is the ONLY true story out there! It was written by Dr. Linwood "Little Bear" Custalow and Angela Daniel "Silver Star", who claim to be descendants of the true Pocahontas, or Matoaka, as her real name was. This book completely does away with any romanticism so often spread about her short life. And, yes, Pocahontas was murdered in the end, by the very people she trusted and loved! This book is a must for anybody who is REALLY seeking to know the truth about her life. It is a very sad, but definitely eyeopening book, that should be part of history lessons in schools, but definitely never will be, because it tells of the true unfeeling, selfish and criminal ways of the white people, when they invaded and took over the American Continent.
