Purchase options and add-ons

Much new material has been added to this revised edition. This covers angling experiences, methods of fishing, flies, lures, lines, leaders and other things. When Trout was first published spinning had not been introduced in the United States. Since that time it has become very popular and I took up the method at once. There are two lengthy and complete chapters on this method of fishing. They cover tackle, methods, and experiences.

Many of the tactics still used by today's trout fishermen were first documented almost 80 years ago by Mr. Bergman in this book. This is the consummate reference book about trout fishing for trout fishermen, and it is written in an easy-to-read story-telling type style. One can easily learn by reading it for pleasure without even realizing you are gaining knowledge and insight. Some parts of the book are more instructive, especially regarding types of flies, fly patterns, and where and when they are most effective. Other parts can almost be viewed as historical relative to where Mr. Bergman was fishing and how he fared. Through it all, Mr. Bergman presents the information not as an expert, but as a fellow fisherman sharing what he has learned from his many years of fishing. It is an incredible book especially considering it is still relevant today, more than half a century since it was first published.

Reading and learning from those who were 70+ years ahead of ones planet earths visit is humbling. My fishing hat is off to Ray for putting his experiences and knowledge on paper for future generations to learn from. When you think you know everything about a subject, you will be quickly scoffed at, by the fish!

Trout . One feature of this classic study that I have always treasured are the color plates of fly patterns painted by Dr. Edgar Burke for the 1938 first edition. These, along with four additional plates (two of fly patterns and two of spinning lures) that Burke painted for the 1952 second edition, have been faithfully reproduced in all subsequent editions and printings --- until now. In this current incarnation, published by the Warren Press in November 2010, the plates are rendered in poorly defined black-and-white photographs that make a mockery of the original art work and serve no useful purpose in helping to identify the fly patterns. The book lacks even the most rudimentary bibliographical information and gives every impression of being simply a photo reproduction of the second edition set in a new binding. Buyers interested in the original art work are therefore advised to search elsewhere for a genuine copy of Bergman's book or purchase the paperback version, which, though I have not seen it, appears to include the color plates.

The stories of fishing various streams will get your blood rushing to the river. As comprehensive a review of flies as you can find.

The book is a great winter read and the older style writing is easy and fun to read. Some good tips that I forgot and some I never knew. Very worthwhile book for any collection.

Great book with lots of useful data but I was not happy to find the photo/plates were reproduced in Black and White.
