Pawns of Deception Paperback – April 28, 2010

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

In Pawns of Deception, new author Beverly Pinske writes a knock down, drag out espionage thriller that goes to show that there are no free rides when it comes to America's freedom. In this, her fast-paced debut spy drama, Pinske's engaging and unforgettable characters demand freedom--and are willing to die for it. No stranger to death, former NSA agent Lisa Wood is tracked down by her former colleague Clark Snow only to learn that his desperate, if cryptic, mission involves a national security issue. Within the hour, she has little choice but to grab her gun and help a small town sheriff uncover a sleeper cell that, if activated, will bring utter chaos to the country and, possibly, the world. Forced into a deadly game of chess, where no one is above being sacrificed and freedom is the final checkmate, the unwitting duo will be forced to discover the game plans of a drug pusher, a computer genius , a well-known philanthropist, and a secret society on a frightening mission.

Lisa and Ben go against the biggest corrupt powers of the world in this suspenseful page-turner. I enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters as they dug deeper and deeper into the web of suspicion and lies, and of course their attraction kept the book going forward.
The author herself is an engaging person to talk with. I met her once and really enjoyed her personality. She told me one guy, after hearing about her book's subject, the One World Order and it's murder and mayhem, said, "And you look like such a NICE lady." Her sense of imagination is pretty amazing, and I look forward to reading what she produces in the future.
I did get kind of bogged down in the long paragraphs of explanation, but her dialogue and action scenes were fantastic. I'm looking forward to the second one!

Exciting new Protagonist Lisa Wood, former NSA agent, takes it upon herself, when her friend is shot, to seek vengeance and find out why he was killed. The idea of a Smart Card being at the center of the intrigue is an unusual one. Small town Sheriff Ben Plater, does his best to keep up with Lisa, and together they fight the bad guys, while trying to deny a definate attraction to each other. This is an interesting and enjoyable romatic page turner.

Pawns of Deception is a page-turner for sure. I like the "spy/thriller" genre and this first book by Beverly Pinske is fast paced and action packed! I kept reading: wanting to know what would happen next and trying to figure out the mysteries and who-done-its as the story unfolds. The potential romance between Ben and Lisa adds interest to the plot and the ending left me ready to read a sequel - hope there is one!
