Review

... a funny and informative glimpse into the minds of men that kept me highly entertained and allowed me to look at some common dating situations in a new, more comical light. --Kristina de la Cal, BellaOnline's Dating Editor

From the Author

Who am I? What do I know? What qualifications do I have to observe and evaluate?

I'm just a man in his late forties who was fortunate enough to have a relatively baggage-free second shot at love and a sense of humor to avoid the depression that comes with rejection. I'm also lucky to be able to work from home, giving me the time to reflect and write about love on the West Coast. Finally, yes it's true: people in Southern California enjoy nicer weather and provide a large dose of physical and social dysfunction, giving me plenty of writing material.

This is not an autobiography. I embellish most of what I write to make it entertaining. Life is interesting, but to embellish is to add spice to the meat of a story. Forgive me for exaggerating and being judgmental and shallow at times. A nice, predictable, and politically correct Phil is a boring Phil--in person and in print. That's why I drink, and that's why I use my imagination.

Some people will find an essay or two they are convinced is about them. Rest assured that nothing in this book is about you, it's all about me: such a nice guy.

Torcivia is a divorced man who transplanted himself from Pennsylvania into the treacherous dating pool in Southern California. His feline companions, Syd and Sonny, share his home in San Diego and an occasional dish of leftover tuna. Torcivia loves nothing better than bellying up to the bar with his favorite social lubrication (bourbon) and watching the bizarre mating rituals of the locals, which he translates into humorous essays. He has been single long enough to be involved in a few train wrecks of his own, admitting that he's "one relationship disaster away from a third cat."

Phil Torcivia is both bad boy and good boy in one. I love the fresh taste in his outlook. His writing affects all my senses and emotions. He makes me laugh, scowl and say 'Ohhh' all on the same page.
I will try to keep the list handy, should I ever get a Pet Phil.
The book if full of how to's for relationships. Take notes.

This book was recommended to me based upon past readings. It's not my typical book, a collection of stories of dating in California. After an initial non-interested page turn, I finally got the jest of his humor and openly enjoyed this fast, witty read. It's not for everyone, and even though the author is approaching 50, it reads a little young for me, I guess because the basic subject is dating and relationships after divorce. But his humorous look at the subject will eventually make you laugh and entertain you.

Warning, Its hard to put this book down once you pick it up. "Such a Nice Guy" is a true insight into the mind of mid-life, new age, heterosexual male with a new outlook on life, love, and things we just don't talk about. Or should I say his twist on them. Such a nice guy would make a such a nice series on Showtime!

Mr. Torcivia has produced a collection of short studies on the life and times of a post forty divorced male. The pieces are of a humorous bent but he does veer serious at times.

I found several of his stories to be quite funny and one or two to be thought provoking. However, this is not a heavy weight book. The author will go for the laugh every time.

He works hard at trying to portray the problems of a basically nice fellow who still wants to enjoy the company of women. At times he works a little too hard in my opinion. He also occasionally falls into the gap between tasteful and outrageous.

But all in all it was a fun book, a quick read and you do not come away with any sense of time wasted. I would recommend it for light reading or a gift for a guy who reads. One note of warning some may feel that the author leans a bit toward homophobia. I read it as locker room humor myself, but I would avoid passing it on to someone who might be twitchy about that sort of thing.

This book had me laughing out loud more than "Nice Meeting You". I laughed so often, that people asked me what I was doing and I said reading -which they found difficult to believe, so I'd read passages to them. Hopefully they have now started reading Phil's books, too!

This book was definitely written by a man. All though I am female, I thought it was great. It was a fun read, and enlightening at the same time. He breaks it all down, but in such a humorous way, you can't help but like him!

Taking a page from the mind of a man....yep, that's how I would begin to sum this book up. It reminds me of the some of the more recently hyped books turned movies (and vice versa) on similiar topics. Author Phil Torcivia allows readers an inside look at the way men, or at least a selection of them, are REALLY thinking with this selection of thoughts and ramblings. Word to the wise, there are several passages that you may be offended by, but such is life. It's a real take-no-prisoners look at the world today from one of the many "drivers" going through the same traffic jams. At the very least, you get a collection of amusing tales. At the most, you might walk away with a better understanding of men and their perspective on woman. It's a win-win either way...what have you got to lose?
