The book is divided into two parts: the first part focuses on Dante's life and the second part examines his literary works. The author provides a detailed analysis of Dante's most famous work, The Divine Comedy, and discusses its historical significance and literary merit. Throughout the book, Butler provides a wealth of information about Dante's life and times, including his political affiliations, his relationships with other writers and artists, and his personal beliefs and values. He also explores the influence that Dante had on later writers and thinkers, both in Italy and around the world. Overall, Dante: His Times And His Work is an informative and engaging book that offers readers a deeper understanding of one of the greatest poets in history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Italian literature, medieval history, or the cultural and political context of the late Middle Ages. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. I loved this book because it shows how far Dante scholarship has come in the past 150 years. This book is a good introduction for the reader who has no inkling of Dante, not just his work but his times. The reader will begin to realize why the poet is such a big deal if a bit ethereal for present day tastes. Also the author does not make the mistake of being obsessed with the first third of the poem which as a problems with the Victorian era.

The author clarifies what went on among Dante's contemporaries which helps greatly for a lay person to grasp the many references. It's written in a style that is scholarly, but easy to follow.

This book gives an insight into the life and times of Dante. Although it is old its discussion is still relevant and rewarding.

As expected.....quite heavy going with lots of peripheral knowledge expected from the reader. Not really a toe dipping book for information. I will finish it but......
