Jackson's book, published in 2010 by Metro Books, tops off at 160 pages. Chapters entitled 'Spifire: The Genesis,' 'The Dangerous Year,' 'On the Offensive,' 'Spitfire Overseas,' 'From Normandy to the Rhine,' 'Spitfires in the Far East' and 'Final Days' concisely summarize the Spit's development and combat history. Each chapter is then broken down into short, two-page segments. 'The Dangerous Year' chapter, for example, includes two-pagers on the first RAF-Luftwaffe contacts, Dunkirk air ops, Spit involvement in the different phases of the Battle of Britain, a typical BoB scramble described, a Spit-Bf 109 comparison, etc.
Much of the material will be familiar to air combat enthusiats, Jackson's bibliography citing many classic Spitfire/air combat/RAF/BoB/etc. books. Likewise, many of the b&w photographs have been seen. However, the many contemporary color pix are what really make SPITFIRE, LIFE OF THE LEGEND a pleasure to page through. Included are detail shots of various surviving Spitfires; items of equipment from individual Spits - including crashed a/c(!) - like a control column; RAF wings and unit shoulder patches; pilot equipment such as mask, goggles, helmet, parachute and life preserver; RAF forms such as station logs, logbooks, maps, tech notes and servicing logs; ground servicing equipment such as battery chargers and oil cans; memorabilia such as Spit pins and buttons; etc. All that material gives the reader an evocative insight into the actual life of this aeronautical legend.
Look for SPITFIRE, LIFE OF THE LEGEND in the Bargain Book section of the major chains; I got mine at B&N for $12.98. There certainly have been more exhaustive and definitive Spit books published. However, I enjoyed the "you-are-there" feeling I got looking at all those images associated with the Spitfire and the men who flew and maintained it...so I plopped down my money. Recommended.
This book is probably a little bit better in scope, though a bit less in content those those volumes. Consisting of chapters that cover not only the entire history of the aircraft, the reader is also given insights into the development of the Spitfire form a stable of racing seaplanes and its designer R J Mitchell. I critique content only over quantity. It appears the book was designed on a two-page-per-chapter approach. I found that, after really getting interested in the chapter's narrative, it ended. However, I want to emphasize that - on a subject that has been covered over and over and over - this book adds new input.
