James Stephens was born in the same hospital and on the same day an hour apart from James Joyce. They met later in life, and did not like each other at first, but eventually became good friends and colleagues. Joyce so admired James Stephens that he said if he were to die before he finished Finnegan's Wake, his magnum opus, he would want James Stephens to finish it before him. Quite a tribute.
Irish Fairy Tales is not just fairy tales, but is also a collection of Irish legends about the ancient heroes of Ireland. This is one of his best works, written in some of the most beautiful and lyrical styles I have ever read. Surely it is for adults, but children love it as well.

I haven't read any of the stories, yet, but the illustrations in this book are superlative.
