The Cricket in Times Square (Chester Cricket and His Friends, 1) Audio CD – CD, April 1, 2008

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 2,934 ratings

Tucker is a streetwise city mouse. He thought he'd seen it all. But he's never met a cricket before, which really isn't surprising, because, along with his friend Harry Cat, Tucker lives in the very heart of New York City―the Times Square subway station. Chester Cricket never intended to leave his Connecticut meadow. He'd be there still if he hadn't followed the entrancing aroma of liverwurst right into someone's picnic basket. Now, like any tourist in the city, he wants to look around. And he could not have found two better guides―and friends―than Tucker and Harry.

The Cricket in Times Square is a 1961 Newbery Honor Book.

Review

“Read by Tony Shalhoub, Selden's story of a clueless insect in New York lights up with the sounds of the city.” ―People magazine

“Young listeners and their grown-ups will thoroughly enjoy Tony Shalhoub's dramatic reading of
The Cricket in Times Square. His stage voice captures every nuance of emotion is George Selden's 1960 novel about a cricket from Connecticut who winds up in New York City and survives with the help of a friendly mouse and cat. This warm and fuzzy tale hasn't lost a hair of charm in 50 years.” ―The Sacramento Bee

“With the talents of Tony Shalhoub, Chester Cricket, Harry Cat, and Tucker Mouse become real characters that the listener can instantly relate to.... Mr. Shalhoub creates unique voices for each of the characters, and from the very beginning, it is easy to decipher which character is doing the speaking.... For anyone not familiar with the classic tale, listening to it will be an adventure. And for those that know the sweet tale of Chester finding himself in a foreign land (at least for him), listening to the story will be a treat.” ―
TeensReadToo.com

“Shalhoub brings dramatic range to the vocals, moving with grace from comforting to street smart.” ―
Kirkus Reviews

“The fabulous adventures of Chester Cricket, Harry Cat and Tucker Mouse are charmingly detailed by George Selden in his Newbery Honor book...Narrated here by Tony Shaloub, it's guaranteed to please the whole family.” ―
BookPage

“Emmy-winner Shalhoub is nothing short of wonderful. The ease with which he spins different accents adds immeasurable color to the story.” ―

Great read!
5 Stars
Great read!
My son (5th grade now in September) was given this story to read as part of his summer work. We both took turns reading a page together and we both quite enjoyed it. The characters had great personalities and were relatable to my sons age range. It wasn’t at all boring to read so it made the assignment easy to do.

This is my favorite book. I read this book to my boys when they were young (5-8yrs) and even though it has very few pictures they looked forward to the story every night. The story is about a cricket that entertains the NYC subway system. An excellent imaginary story that brings us to a simpler world. This is a good starter book for young readers starting chapter books.

This is a good book because it’s about friendship and love between a small little cricket named Chester and somehow he got transported to New York and he found a cat and a mouse to be friends with. They live in a drain pipe next to a newsstand and there is a kid named Mario who owns the newsstand with his mom and dad. I think this is a good story because it’s very cute and kind of sad at the end though. But it’s a good book. - CCH age 7

The Cricket in Times Square is a great tale for young and old alike. I read it many, many times as a child, and enjoy gifting it to the children in my life! Chester, the anthropomorphic Cricket goes on an adventure of a lifetime from CT to NYC as he hops inside a picnic basket to score some liverwurst sandwich bites! He makes friends with animals and humans alike, and becomes a miniature celebrity to boot!

I never read this book as a child but chose it based on the reviews to read aloud to my 6 year old daughter. I am very discerning when it comes to books. I absolutely adored this book and so did my daughter. It made me think about all the fluff and poor writing that exists for children's literature. Just because they are young doesn't mean that they shouldn't be treated to beautiful writing. I cried at several points (and re-read many passages because they were so breathtaking), and my daughter cried when it was over. We also read Tucker's Countryside, which was a close second to this book, and finished with Harry Kitten and Tucker Mouse (my least favorite) and Chester's Pigeon Ride (a distant third). I would recommend this and Tucker's Countryside in a heartbeat. And I look forward to my daughter reading it on her own in the near future.

I bought this book for my 9year old for Christmas remembering how much I had liked it when I was young. Although he is an excellent reader it is sometimes hard to get him to actually sit down and read. When he first opened the gift he seemed genuinely disappointed to see that it was a book and not a video game, but once he started reading it took him little time to finish it on his own. Not only that, he has asked me to get another book from the series.

When i first picked up this book, I couldn't put it down anymore. It brings you on this joyful adventure, set beneath the streets of the well known Times square. There, in an old drainage pipe, lives Tucker mouse, with his best friend Harry cat in a wonderful companionship. When the two friends meet a dirty cricket, that came all the way from Connecticut, and loves chirping little compositions, they need to help the confused cricket get used to the big City's lifestyle. Also trying to save the decreasing buisness of a poor family's newsstand, the animals stay together, even when it seems hopeless. A story of true Friendship, Happiness and the relationship between a boy and a cricket.
