This is the first Zane Grey novel that I have read that is told in the first person. It took getting used to at first.

Typical Zane Grey: descriptive, insightful, and showing an understanding of human nature and how that built the west and aided our country in its growth.

I enjoyed this book, but it's not like any Zane grey book I have read previously. Makes me wonder if he wrote it in conjunction with one of his kids--or if it's a Loren Zane Grey book but the publisher left off the "Loren" part? It has some of Zane's quirks of language, which I love, but not consistently and there are other bits of language that are uncharacteristic of him (more uses of "damn" or "hell" than I have found in any of his other books, for instance), and far more focus on the love interest than I have found in any of his other works.

Anyway, it's a good book but I can't get past the idea that I'm reading someone else who is trying to write like Zane Grey but not quite making it. I guess the joke's on me if it really were written by Grey.

While way to long. It turned out to be a story about the Texas old west and also a love story about two different couples.

To me, this is most unusual for a Zane Grey book. First, it seems to be about two main characters, rather than one. Both are Texas Rangers, Russ Sittell working undercover and the almost superhuman Vaughn Steele holding the attention of the the town of Linrock. Second Russ is the narrator of the book. Russ gets a job with the rancher Sampson, also town mayor, and is put in charge of watching out for his daughter and visiting cousin. Townspeople have written to the rangers to provide help due to the rustling and unsolved murders. The mayor and his right hand man Wright are believed to be the gang's leaders, but it is up to Russ to get the proof from the inside. Of course, every Zane Grey story has to have a romance and this book has two. Steele falls in love with Sampson's beautiful daughter, Diane, who is also the target of the rustler Wright. And Russ falls in love with the cousin, Sally. Romance makes the duties of the Rangers more difficult, but the makings for a good book.

I am a very senior citizen, so it's been many, many years since I read any of Zane Grey's books. When I saw this listed at Amazon for my Kindle, my mind reversed, and I remembered I loved those books when I was a youngster. Now I am happy I did. The book is extremely well written, along the line of McMurtry. The descriptiveness of people, scenes and actions was worth the few hours I spent reading it. I'll go on soon reading some more Zane Gray novels and really enjoy them.
