Critical Conditions (Alan Gregory Series) Audio CD – CD, July 15, 2009

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 348 ratings

Summoned to the hospital to learn the motives behind a teenage girl's suicide attempt, Alan discovers that the girl's young stepsister lies near death in another hospital with a heart disease. Denied an experimental new treatment that could save her life by her parent's managed-care provider, the stepsister has become a symbol of a health care system more concerned with costs than with the lives of its patients. And when a wealthy executive of the family's HMO is found dead, Alan and Denver detective Sam Purdy uncover the truth that links the teenage girl to his death, and the truth behind a family willing to kill in the name of love...and revenge.

Just when I was bemoaning the lack of page turners I couldn't put down, I found this book. The characters are likeable, but also real. The plot is a good one and even though I sometimes suspected what was coming, I still had to keep going until the end, for the denouement, which was a genuine 'unknotting'. I had read a good one by this author before and, luckily, remembered him in time to purchase and download this book before a long overseas flight. If you like psychology, police work and thorny family problems, this is your read.

An exciting story with some nice twists and revelations. At times there can be a tad bit too much "filler" where the writing adds little to the story, compelling me to want to scan and skip ahead.

Yet another fine installment in the Alan Gregory series. This time, author Stephen White takes on managed health care and HMO's. He has a 15 year old patient who has attempted suicide and almost was successful. Her family is in the midst of dealing with their HMO regarding an experimental drug for their younger daughter. White weaves the tale intricately and soon has us immersed in the story. I think this book is best enjoyed as part of the series and one would benefit from reading the earlier books. I really liked the side of Detective Sam Purdy in this one.

Stephen White is a doctor who writes books that seem more intended to promote his social viewpoints than entertain his readers. This time, he savages insurance companies with undeserved vitriol (he's a doctor; duh.). In an earlier book he crucifies the Mormon church with surprising hatred. Which is his prerogative, of course, but, as indicated by other reviews here, it leaves a bad taste in the mouths of his readers -- certainly this reader. "Critical Conditions" is a fair thriller which holds one's attention, but there are just too many serendipitous coincidences and character connections here, which I feel are the signs of a not-quite-ready-for-prime-time writer. And after you've read a few of White's books, you come to know the formula and can almost predict where the book's going to go. I liked his first book but with each subsequent book, I find him less and less satisfying. Unfortunately, after I read the first book, I ordered all his books from Amazon.com and now I'm stuck with having to read them. Well, there are worse books one could read and I gotta admit that once I start a White book, I usually can't put it down. But once it's finished, it's eminently forgettable. Three stars.

Very well-written, intense, fast-paced. I have very much enjoyed all of Lee Child's Reacher adventures, and while awaiting the next installment a friend introduced me to Dr Alan Gregory. Generally speaking, these stories have less graphic violence (which is fine with me) but have similar intensity and reach an equally satisfying conclusion. Well-done!!

Decent, fast-paced read. Wish some of the character attachments were a little less confusing but overall good book. I would consider reading more from this author.

I enjoyed the book and had a tough time putting it down at night. I kept thinking I'd read just one more chapter, then just one more. There were more characters than usual, so at first it was tough remembering who was who, but it was a good storyline and told well.

Very good read as usual fro Stephen white, featuring his wonderful stars, the dr, & the policeman. They are cleverly intermeshed as with all previous adventures, as with Keller an, white spins a great psycological tale. You can always count on a great read. More to come o hope!
