Interlude in Death: This is number 12.5 in the series. Eve has only been to Rourke’s off plant Olympus Resort twice. Her honeymoon and now a cop convention. Both times there has been death. We meet the chief of police on Olympus, Darcia Angelo.
Commander Skinner, fifty years on the job. He makes it very clear that Rourke is going down as is Eve for consorting with the enemy and basically spitting on the badge. Years ago one of Skinner’s operations went sideways. Several of his men were killed. Skinner’s informant - Rourke’s father, had double crossed him. As life winds down all Skinner can see is taking Rourke down and Eve with him as she has forgotten her duty.
Eve’s life will be perfect if is she never has to return to The Olympus Resort again. Eve’s closing words are New York is her idea of a resort.
Midnight in Death: This is number 7.5 in the series. Dallas arrested David Palmer and sent him to a cage for the rest of his life. It is Christmas Day and the judge from the Palmer case has been found brutally tortured with a note from David Palmer who has escaped from prison. In a few days three are dead, all part of the Palmer case. For New Year’s Eve he wants Eve. This story is early in their marriage, Rourke is beginning his civilian consultant role. It’s fun to see that McNab irritates Peabody. Eve shows she has feelings for Dr. Mira as she too is on the list.
Haunted in Death: this is number 22.5 in the series.
For me it is ironic how well Nora Roberts writes about the “other word” but have a ghost in a JD Robb story and Eve Dallas can’t back herself far enough away. Eve is clear there’s no such thing as ghosts. Approximately eighty years ago Bobby Bray was a singer in the late sixties and seventies. She was living with Hop Hopkins, fellow musician and her agent/manager/lover/drug dealer/father of her child. Today in New York Hop Hopkins grandson is found shot to death with nine bullets in him. Off to the side is a brick wall torn apart and inside is a body with a bullet hole. The body is Bobby Bray. Eve is trying to find justice for both bodies while those around her are positive there is a ghost.
Midnight In Death - Book 7.5 - Eve is pulled into a new case hours after closing the last where Peabody was attacked. Eve knows who it is & just needs to find him. The killer is a serial killer Eve put away before & has escaped from prison. Mira is kidnapped. Eve, Peabody, Feeney, Roarke & McNab track down the murderer just in time for Eve to use her anytime/anywhere free Christmas gift from Roarke. Aww! 🥰
Interlude in Death - Book 12.5 - Eve is at an off-planet police convention at the Olympus Resort which Roarke owns. A former commander asks Eve to help him take Roarke down. She “politely” declines. 😂 There are 2 deaths that the very sloppy evidence points to Roarke. The Olympus police chief knows it's not him as it's an obvious framejob. They figure out it's the son of the commander.
Haunted in Death, book 22.5 - Peabody & Eve are investigating the death of a man, Rad, who is killed at a building he owned, that used to be a club. While searching the building they find the skeleton of another person. The skeleton ends up being a long-time-missing woman, Bobbie Bray, killed by the same gun that killed Rad. Eve figures out that it is the granddaughter of Bobbie & Rad’s grandfather, Hop, & she is saying she is Bobbie reincarnated. Spooky!
Interlude in Death: Eve has to go to a police conference held off-planet on one of Roarke's resorts. She hates space travel, and loathes giving speeches so when the conference is interrupted by a murder - it's fortuitous for her, if not the victim. The culprit is easy to guess right from the start, but it is the motive that keeps Eve investigating. This story was good because sometimes good people lose their way, and it was interesting to see how Eve handled that.
Midnight in Death: Christmas is interrupted by an escaped murderer previously caught by Eve. Once again, there isn't much need for investigating as Eve knows who the killer is. The suspense is built by the two of them playing a deadly game of cat and mouse against each other. Short, but engaging.
Haunted in Death: This is my favorite of the three, because it pits the straight-laced Eve against something that just might be otherworldly. Do ghosts really exist? Eve is called to a murder committed with a hand gun - unheard of in her time. Moreover, another very old body is discovered at the same location - a location said to be haunted. This story was fun, and kept me guessing because the killer is not obvious.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this collection and hope the publisher does the same with more of the In Death novellas. Highly recommended.
