Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850-1894), a Scottish novelist, poet and essayist, was influential to the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, and J. M. Barrie. His most famous works include "Treasure Island" and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Originally intending to study engineering at the University of Edinburgh, Stevenson expended more energy dodging lectures than attending them. He shifted his studies to law, passing the bar but never actually practicing the profession. Instead he began to seek success through writing, beginning with travel novels, exploring Europe and weaving stories from his own experiences. "The Black Arrow" is a tale comparable to his most famous works, the plot swiftly carried by thrilling suspense and narrow escapes. Set during the Middle Ages, Stevenson depicts the harsh conditions of life at that time, as well as the horrors of civil war, dealing in particular with the fifteenth-century War of the Roses.

I would recommend not buying this version. When I downloaded it to our kindle, for some reason, it was just a bunch of numbers. I haven’t had this happen before so not sure why. We ended up buying another copy of the book and that one worked.

A terrific historical novel -- the narrative voice may be a trifle archaic for the modern young reader -- I adored it in 1972 or so, but my girlfriend's son struggled with the prose (after really digging Treasure Island). It's also the one RLS classic with a female protagonist.

This was purchased for my son as 6th grade summer reading. It is well beyond his and possibly all 6th-7th graders' reading level. The archaic English makes it harder than it should be. Still a great book with lots of period flavor as RLS always provides.

I've loved this story since I was in high school. It's still my favorite book to this day. This particular copy was purchased for a Christmas gift. It appears to be entirely legit and five star worthy like any other copy of this book...

Great story but the old English grammar and sentence structure makes it slow going.

A crackling good adventure story, difficult to read in the vernacular, it has lots of smiting, tomfoolery, heraldry, mountebanks, blackguards, and jackanapes.

My rating is not a reflection on the story but on this specific printing, which is crummy. The cover is so incredibly pixelated that I can only assume it was printed from an up-ressed Google-image thumbnail. If you printed out the tiny preview image on this page at 6x9, you'll have an idea what I mean. The text formatting is weird (double spaced, no paragraph indentations, etc.). I should have looked at the publisher info before buying as it is clearly a print-on-demand slapped together job. Buy one designed and printed by a real publisher if you want for it to look and feel like a real book

Merce aderente alle caratteristiche, come sempre Amazon mi stupisce per i tempi di spedizione. Unico neo la scissione dell'ordine in molti sotto ordini che dovrebbe favorire il cliente, ma lo penalizza con i pagamenti.
