The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge
5 Stars
The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge
As with all Sherlock Holmes mysteries--those by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and not later pretenders, excepting perhaps Adrian Doyle's few efforts--I truly enjoy reading and re-reading the exploits of the famous detective. Outside of Holmesian enthusiasts, few realise that Conan Doyle was himself the model for Holmes AND Watson, being a medical doctor, and one of the first unofficial consulting detectives anywhere. That designation, "unofficial consulting detective," claimed by Holmes, was one of Conan Doyle's own defining titles. In Doyle, and his combined alter egos, Holmes and Watson, we have the incipient modern "private detective," but with a far greater sense of scientific deduction and evidence gathering. In "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" we have many good examples of Doyle's own methods of deduction, and his working at seeming odds with the official police forces, while in reality complimenting their efforts, and never detracting from their own successes, indeed, often giving them the credit for his own discoveries and resolutions of criminal mysteries.

Another will written Sherlock Holmes mystery with Dr Watson. The characters are interesting and will developed. The story line is complicated with lots of misdirection leading to the unexpected conclusion. I would recommend this novella to Holmes fans. Enjoy reading 🔰2021😤

They are all good. This one no better or worse. With sir Arthur Conan Doyle you are guaranteed a relaxing quality read. Just entertainment ...won't make you a better person.

Well, generally, readers of Sherlock Holmes are looking for some great detective work; the piecing together of a few scant clues to piece together a puzzle of a crime. This story, while wildly imaginative and unexpected, does little to build a tapestry of deduction and instead settles on mild suspense.

***Spoiler Alert***

The "Adventure" at Wisteria Lodge is a bizarre set of circumstances including not only a Voodoo side-track, but a despot exile as well! These inclusions certainly makes this Holme's tale stand out from the rest, although little else in the story would distinguish it. Hearing Holmes and others talk about "foreigners," a mulatto and "swarthy" people reveals the period prejudices quite clearly, and this detracted from my enjoyment of the story. What points the finger at the villain more clearly than saying that he is ugly, savage of temperment and creepy looking?

In some cases, in this book, they turn natural prejudices against you, by revealing that the most savage looking person is not the killer, and this was good. This did little for the story, since it was pointed out by Holmes that this person wasn't likely to be the criminal, but it should be mentioned.

Overall, Sherlock was fairly charming, as usual, but a guest dectective from the country was the star of the show. This is great, to break up the monotony of reading a lot of Holmes, but as a single story, it was disappointing.

An interesting premise for a story, for sure, and if that is all you are looking for, you wont be disappointed. Compared to the other Sherlock Holmes stories, however, the Adventure at Wisteria Lodge ranks near the bottom of the list.

The greatest sleuth of all time has never felt more "average."

Entirely skippable.

I enjoyed reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge.” It is free on Amazon Kindle. Doyle is a masterful writer. Interestingly, while he was by nature and inclination a mystic and preached mysticism, he had the ability to create one of the most famous rational and logical investigators, the beloved figure Sherlock Holmes.
This story’s beginning, while as usual very interesting, does not foreshadow the complex nature of the case and the heinous criminal involved in the murder not only of one, but of many people.
The story begins when a disheveled unshaven man, who was otherwise an elegant man, rushes to Holmes seeking his advice and help. He had met a young Spanish gentleman who seemed to like him and who invited him to his home where he had two servants. He went. During a meal, a note was brought to his host with strange sentences about green and white. The Spanish man tossed the note into the fireplace. The distraught man went to sleep. In the morning, the Spanish man and his two servants disappeared. While Holmes talked to the man, two police officers came to Holme’s apartment and revealed that the Spanish man had been brutally murdered. The rest of the story involves Holmes’s investigation and deductions.

It was a pleasant read and you can't beat price! Couldn't give it give five stars only because I found it a little boring at times

A Spanish gentleman invites an English gentleman to visit him. They are to have dinner in a beautiful country mansion and sleep overnight. Spanish gentleman even shows his bedroom to his new friend, in a manor If you need anything during the night, and I mean anything, please come. And an Englishmen is just like OK, goodnight. In the morning, an entire household is missing, and the guest is left alone. In a state of disarray, he travels to London to complain to Sherlock. Inspector Lestrade finds him there and arrests him for murder.
No wonder Sherlock starts laughing. But non the less, he will solve the case and rescue the innocent, no matter how gulible they are.

This is one of the stories place in rural England, in one of those manors we find amazing and fancy but in reality, most of them are cold and devastated and, in Doyles's stories, hiding some obscure crime.
After being invited to one of those manors, Holmes's client finds it hard to believe that in the morning the manor is totally abandoned. His host vanished in thin air, the servants are also nowhere to be found.
I like the way how Sherlock is following leads even if there are taking him far away from England.

This is a review of the free Kindle version.

The story is a typical Holmes story, with the notable exception of a policeman who is actually comparable to Holmes in ability. Very unusual in the mythos, as even Gregory doesn't have the necessary imagination. If you like Holmes, I recommend this free download.

The reason I drop it a star is the lousy Kindle formatting. The mutilation of the paragraphs is really inexcusable. This needs a good clean up badly. No reflection on Doyle, of course.
