Coming from a family history rooted in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, I appreciate the author's research and respect for the old ways in which country families survived and made money in very poor communities . She managed to weave a story with history, a little romance, and mystery! A great combination and very interesting book.

I liked the plot of the story which concerned the ginseng crop in Kentucky. Some wanted it to be plentiful so the government would consider it profitable to export it while others did not. I liked the characters: Jess, Cassie, Drew, Seth, and others. I didn't really know who the murderer was until the end and thought it was someone else. I thought the author wrote the suspenseful scenes well. I enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries.

Interesting story. I didn't know that ginseng grew wild in America, not that I knew much about it anyway. I just assumed that it was a Chinese plant.

Jessie Lockwood grew up in the Appalachian mountains in the small community of Deep Down. Here in the shady woods grows wild ginseng that is much sought after in the Chinese market and helps form a welcome income for Deep Down's inhabitants. However, the Government is keeping a tally of the plants and if that tally is low, then it will impose a temporary ban on the sale of the root. Which will not please Deep Down's ginseng sellers or the major Chinese client.

Jessie's mother Mariah is employed to count the ginseng and one day she goes missing while on a count. Jessie, now a research biologist, is contacted by the local sherrif and friend Drew Webb, that her mother is missing and races home to Deep Down to join in the search.

The problem is that her Mother's notes on the ginseng sites are missing and without them the searchers have too wide a territory to search. It seems that local Cherokee man opposed to the sale of the root maybe implicated, or maybe her mother ran into ginseng poachers; there again there seems to be a Deep Down equivalent of Big Foot on the prowl. As Jessie and Drew race to find her mother, they begin to fall in love with each other.

An enjoyable and interesting book. Unlike the other reviewer, I didn't work out the villan right away, mainly because I couldn't figure out a motive. Lots of suspects and red herrings.

If you're interested in this book you'll already have read the synopsis, so there's no point in my repeating it here, and I don't want to give away any spoilers, so suffice it to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and finished it in one day. It was more believable than the M&B I remembered from their straight romances and the characters were much more real than in most of the M&B books I've already read. If you're looking for a light read that will grasp your attention but not be "unputdownable" you've found it here.

Deep Down is a place in Kentucky. The story follows Dr Jessica Lockwood as she returns from HongKong. She has been told that her mother is missing.Deep Down is a place where the main crop is gensing or sang.
This is an intriguing tale and I could not put it down. When Jess left DeepDown she left behind a man she was secretly in love with, now she was returning and he was a sheriff.Does the course of true love run smooth for her? This is not wholely a love story as the reader will find out.The last few pages took me by surprise but I will not spoil it.I received this book free for review.
