1921. From the master of the western comes a novel full of romance and adventure. Rancher Bill Belllounds brought up Columbine as though she were his daughter. Out of affection for her foster father, Columbine agrees to marry his son Jack, who is a drunkard, gambler, coward, and thief. But she really loves the cowboy, Wilson Moore. Then, the Mysterious Rider appears at the Belllounds ranch, a man of middle age, gentle, kindly, but so formidable a gun fighter he has earned the nickname Hell Bent Wade. He will play a pivotal role in righting the wrongs in the story. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Woke Version
This independently published version is editorially sanitized. I do not know how it impacts the story. Regardless, it's an ideological rewrite. To paraphrase Santayana, those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

Very touching story by the great Mr. Grey. Beautiful descriptions and characterizations throughout, as we follow “the mysterious rider”, through a story that builds to an exciting climax. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Lass, there's got to be balance in nature. If it weren't for the ugly an' the evil, we wouldn't know the beautiful an' good..."

More than just your ordinary Western, I simply love the manner in which this author writes! Do yourself a favor and grab more than one from a collection like Zane Grey Collection ASIN: B01D5FCIOW, The Zane Grey Collection: 38 Classic Works ASIN: B00DGX79IO so as to get more bang for your buck. A great read and leave you with one final passage before I ride off into the sunset "I love life, with all it brings. I wouldn't have the joy without the pain." Get this book!

This is a book I had read long ago. Zane Grey describes a land of wildness, wilderness, deep romance, and of justice. I read this story with the the light of adolescent ideals. I reread this story with the light of maturity. I enjoyed it more having already lived much of my life.

Zane Grey was one of my favorite authors in my youth and I've read all of his books, but after purchasing this one in large print for my brother I found myself wanting to read it again. My brother has need of large print and it is more pleasant for me also. I'm so glad I purchased this for him.

The more I read Zane’s work the more it gets corny and wordy! It’s not bad but overwhelmingly wordy and corny at times

The mysterious rider is a very fascinating story as most of Zane Grey's novels are. However I would like to comment on another book that I failed to comment on in the past. The book is O Henry's Cabbages and Kings which in my opinion is the best book ever written and I would give it about ten stars. I have read it manny manny times.

can't say that this was the perfect book,so I could not give it a 5. The book was enjoyable reading,it did very well at keeping your attention and interest, while not becoming a one track of action. I think the writer did a good job of keeping the reader off balance with the character types, though to some this could be something not to the reader's liking. I would tell my dad-in-law about the book, and anyone who likes to read western books.

Zane Grey is my favorite Western author, a master of the English language. This is a slower-moving work, not your stereotypical shoot-'em-up Western. Well-developed characters and a good plot. I bought this for a young lady as a high school graduation present; think possibly that it might appeal more to women than men.

Would make a really good film as well. Alpha male always gets the alpha female and a ranch as should always happen in a western novel!
