Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Often flat and uninspired in its interactions, this by-the-numbers 1820s romance relies on complicated subplots and the heartstring-tugging tale of reunited childhood sweethearts. Lady Callista Taillefaire has been jilted three times and is resolved to devote herself to raising cattle, particularly her prize-winning bull, Hubert. When her lost love, Trevelyn, returns from nine years away, that resolve is firmly tested, but no sooner is their romance rekindled than he is convicted of forgery and forced into exile. Readers may enjoy the history lessons in several creaky but soundly constructed tales of Trevelyn's wartime experiences with another of Callie's former suitors, but Kinsale neglects to fill in the background details for Trevelyn and his unsavory valet, ex-boxer Jock, preferring to follow romance conventions with monotonous regularity. Yes, this book is delicious. The hazy, lazy, fog that descends upon Callie when Trev is near, especially when close enough to touch is beyond fantasy. But, even as this sweetness sucks the reader further into the relationship, in my opinion, the best part of this book is the lovely dialogue between Trev and Callie.

In giving Trev his unique personality and communication skills - not just with Callie, but in the way he jokes and banters around with everyone, Ms. Kinsale's gift is further revealed and one can judge it for what it is - pure genius. Indeed, few writers can compare with her ability to make the reader feel what the primary characters are thinking and feeling to the point, it becomes empathic. Even the way Trev communicated with his mama and his hired help was absolutely fascinating.

The only comparison I can make to the dialogue featured in this book would be the letters at the beginning of "My Sweet Folly" where we once again have the best of Ms. Kinsale's unique gift. I dare say, few authors in this genre compare when up against this type of banter and dialogue, although Sherry Thomas does come to mind, however, in my experience, her books have a much more serious bent than what we find in "Lessons in French."

I have read hundreds of romance novels and find myself to be very ungenerous with my reviews. I can count in one hand the number of five-star ratings I have given and two of those have been for LK books. While Lessons in French falls well short of my “Holy Grail of Romance Novels” one-hand list, it is in the solid category of “Pretty Damm Good”. Like so many other readers, i find it hard to explain what, exactly, makes LK so different. But her stories leave me full somehow. Her characters are so true to life, her couples perfect in their imperfect yearning to be loved and understood, even while they don’t understand themselves. None of her scenes or dialogue is wasted; they all lead the reader to understand how fear of being truly known keeps people apart. If you have read LK before, this is a nice deviation from her darker stories but with a H/h that are classically flawed in the LK way. If you have not read LK before, please don’t start here. Read Flowers from the Storm or the Shadow and the Star. She will either become the standard by which you judge all others, or you will be saving some kindle bucks by not reading her other books.

A new Laura Kinsale book!!!!!!!!! I pre-ordered this book as soon as I knew of its existence and happily awaited its delivery by Amazon (early, which made me even happier).

If you are a Laura Kinsale fan (as am I) you will probably buy this book. I certainly recommend that you do so, as waiting for her work is a little like waiting for rain in the desert - you take what you get.

I really liked the characters in this book; Trev and Callie are great fun, full of the quirkiness that makes them fully drawn and interesting; like someone you might like to get to know. I never fully felt as if I knew Trev, until the end, and didn't feel as if he was drawn with as much detail as Callie was. Still, he is a complex and interesting hero - full of flaws and human frailties that make him more compelling. Callie, too, the wallflower that purposefully dresses poorly and spends her time at parties contemplating her toes and daydreaming, is interesting, fun and very human. Secondary characters including Trev's mother, Callie's cousin-in-law and others are well drawn and make for a good read.

The plot however, seems to bounce all over the place. Is Trev a good guy or a bad guy? Should Callie trust him or not trust him? Some plot twists - including hiding a prize bull with laundry - are both funny and clever, but others just remind me of the old Abbot and Costello routine "Who's on First". I'll probably read it again just to see if the plot makes better sense on a second reading, and hope that Laura is hard at work on something else which I look forward to - but also hope she manages to avoid tangling up the silk lines of her plot so much.

Indeed, readers familiar with Ms Kinsale's writing find dark, intriguing and deep-thinking characters; those are the males, the females you will find in one sort of pickle or another. That sounds to be a very generic description for many books, but it's what Ms Kinsale does with these characters that rates her #1 every time. Who else is able to write dialogue in Kinsale's manner? Yes, she's deep, but there's always a glimmer of hope that all will be worked out in the end, only one never knows how the main characters will pop out intact and together; that's the page turner for me. Notice her characters on the sidelines: she's excellent at making these people catch and keep our attention also. Oh, the language, vocabulary, usage and banter; it needs concentration and commendation because it is very clever and essential to the intrigue we find with these characters. If you prefer to read your books in a day's worth of breaks while at work, these will not be for you, rather, take some time and discover these volumes of books that are the ultimate re reads. And the re reads reveal different views, just as the turning of a faceted gem in the light reveals a new view at each turn. These books jet immediately to my Personal Top 10 reads and remain there because I check them with regularity in order to ensure that is truly where they belong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light romance with all the complexity we usually find in Kinsale's novel.

Laura Kinsale writes the best angst novels I've ever had the pleasure to read, and I was expecting something along those lines with this book. I believe this one does not fall into that category, but don't let it loose your interest. It is such a lovely light romance with all the complexity we usually find in Kinsale's novel. The characters are lovely, and I particularly enjoyed the heroine.
