About the Author

Ben Stein can be seen talking about finance on Fox TV news every week. He is known to many as a movie and television personality, but has probably worked more in personal and corporate finance than anything else. He has written about finance for Barron’s and The Wall Street Journal for decades and contributes regularly to the AARP’s    Modern Maturity (now AARP: The Magazine). He was one of the chief busters of the junk bond frauds of the 1980s, has been a long-time critic of corporate executives’ self-dealing, and has written several self-help books about personal finance.  Phil DeMuth was valedictorian of his class at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1972, then got his master’s in communications and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. An investment psychologist with a longstanding interest in the stock market, he has written for The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s, as well as Human Behavior and Psychology Today. His opinions have been quoted on theStreet.com and Fortune Magazine and is president of Conservative Wealth Management in Los Angeles.

Great Book but Need help with finding Table
Wonderful book! Very simple to understand. But on page 81 at the top he gives a formula to determine how much you need to retire and says to refer to Table 3.7, but I cannot find Table 3.7? What page is that on?

I have recommended this book to many-especially young adults who want to start saving. This book is a quick read and easy to understand. Most important - advice that works$$$$$$

Not everyone wants to invest the way these guys suggest but a lot of generally excellent advice for those either looking at retirement or those already retired looking at best methods for using their nest egg.

Really enjoyed this book. I'm an experienced investor and still came away with useful information. For those who believe this was all gloom & doom....WAKE UP ! While I do believe they used a worst case scenerio their messages are right on. Start saving now, live below your means and learn about various investment options so you can take care of yourself in retirement. Great book to help pull peoples head out of the sand. I love Ben !!

Well written book. I'm not a financial planner but I walked away believing these guys came as close to laying out a template for a good plan as any financial planner I have ever met with. I'm going to buy copies for my children - like Ben says, "If you are old enough to have sex, you are old enough to plan for your retirement" (maybe I did not get that quote exactly right - but close enough!!)

This book presented the topic of funding a retirement in a positive and "fun to read" way. I found the information very useful for planning for the future. I have read many articles and publications on the topic and this is one of the better presentations. I recommend this book as a solid source for helping develop a retirement strategy, especially for late starters.

After reading this book, I can't say I felt reassured about "retiring comfortably" but I can say that I learned quite a bit. Stein and his co-author do provide formulas for both the conservative and more risk-tolerant saver and investor, including a "couch potato" formula for the conservative investor. Another point worth thinking about - how much you should have in U.S. investments and how much in international funds, especially in our ever global economy. Stein delves into this quite a bit.

I think the title of this book is a bit misleading and should read, "Yes, you MAY still Retire Comfortably" - IF you are able to save enough, inflation and taxes don't spiral out of control, etc. The ONE point I got from this book is that there are no formulas that guarantee a comfortable retirement but there are guidelines that up the chances of reaching that goal considerably.

Trouble is, if you want to be reasonably sure you'll have enough money for retirement you have to save a LOT more than the average American does and, ideally, carry little to no credit card debt. The figures, I'll admit, shook me up. Most Americans have HUGE mortages, significant credit card deb and are paying off debt (slowly) when they should be saving.

However, as grim as the picture may seem to be, Stein allows for readers to tack in variables such as expected Social Security income, various rates of inflation, etc. If the "best case" scenario occurs, people may not need to save as much. If the "worst case scenario" takes place, watch out!

I think most people reading this book will discover that they need to save FAR more than they think per year, stop counting on Social Security as a "given" , etc. The outlook for Baby Boomers isn't great, IF they don't heed the advice in this book and start thinking carefully about how important that designer outfit is - versus living decently in retirement.

I really like the idea's explained in this book. I listen to Ben Stein often and always enjoy hearing his thoughts on financial planning.
He appears frequently on Fox so I get to hear his current thinking on the markets.

A friend gave me this book yesterday and it took about 2 hours to read. The information was basic stuff that most people know unless they are living under a rock. The government is broke. Social Security crisis, higher taxes, inflationary spirals, etc. can all be looked forward to in the future. Private pensions are broke and will depend more on government bailouts. The authors don't use scare tactic hype, but well documented facts.

Solution: You are going to have to save more and invest wisely. Retirement checklists are reviewed, along with investment strategies based upon age and income. Specific investment funds are listed, I wonder if the authors got a cut???? But overall, the information that you would pay for by buying this book is out there on the internet. Dig a little and you can find plenty of information about the retirement problems, investment strategies, and funds. I would recommend the Millionaire Next Door if you want a general understanding on how individuals develop wealth.
