In my opinion, this collection finds the Teen Titans at the top of their game in many respects - author Sean McKeever is very comfortable with the characters by this point, and the line-up is one of my all-time favourites (Red Devil, Blue Beetle and Miss Martian are great, and Wonder Girl is written in a surprisingly bearable fashion). You'll find a lot of people who refuse to accept this version of the Titans, as it barely resembles the classic Wolfman/Perez 80's Teen Titans lineup or the newer Johns/McKone Superboy/Kid Flash/Robin team. However, if you can look past this, you'll find characters oozing personality and humour, with just the right amount of inter-team tension to keep things interesting. The Titans were never meant to be a stable, constant group. This is where young heroes go to bond and learn... a revolving door roster is in the very nature of the team.
McKeever, as usual, writes a great mix of teen drama and action, with witty asides and references thrown in to keep things interesting. The stories he works with here deal with the influx of new members to the team in the wake of Robin's departure, as well as some tragic upheavals of other kinds taking place within Titans Tower. We also get a great story about Red Devil/Kid Eternity going through hell... literally.
A good deal of the art is handles by Eddy Barrows, who is my absolute favourite artist working in comics today. Seriously, take a look and I think you'll agree with me. The issues without Barrows are almost up to par.
A word of caution though: this collection marks the end of the stable McKeever period. After this book comes the horrible Deathtrap Titans/Teen Titans/Vigilante crossover (being collected soon). Following that, the Titans comics lose their steady creative team, and suffer through constant hero roster changes which, unlike the changes made during this book, make little sense. Also, if you're a Ravager fan like me, you'll be disappointed to learn that she's absent for most of this collection (she was off cavorting around in McKeever's spin-off 'Terror Titans' series, which is collected as a trade paperback now too).
Overall a good book, nothing special stands out too much that would ever mark this as a classic piece but it definitely is an essential read to keep up with the teen titans antics involving all characters featured, touching on Robin who is still reeling and emotionally unstable as he deals with the aftermath of Batman R.I.P and Final Crisis, Wonder Girl confronts family issues and matters of power and Red Devils contract with Neron is explored in greater detail add that to new and old enemies in the form of Lycus and Brother Blood really beefing up the content of the story.
A good book with plenty to entertain. contains Teen Titans #62 - #69
