ISABEL DALHOUSIE - Book 3

Nothing captures the charm of Edinburgh like the bestselling Isabel Dalhousie series of novels featuring the insatiably curious philosopher and woman detective.  Whether investigating a case or a problem of philosophy, the indefatigable Isabel Dalhousie, one of fiction’s most richly developed amateur detectives, is always ready to pursue the answers to all of life’s questions, large and small.

The delectable third installment in the bestselling and already beloved adventures of Isabel Dalhousie and her no-nonsense housekeeper, Grace.

When friends from Dallas arrive in Edinburgh and introduce Isabel to Tom Bruce – a bigwig at home in Texas – several confounding situations unfurl at once. Tom’s young fiancée’s roving eye leads Isabel to believe that money may be the root of her love for Tom. But what, Isabel wonders, is the root of the interest Tom begins to show for Isabel herself? And she can’t forget about her niece, Cat, who’s busy falling for a man whom Isabel suspects of being an incorrigible mama’s boy. Of course Grace and Isabel’s friend Jamie counsel Isabel to stay out of all of it, but there are irresistible philosophical issues at stake – when to tell the truth and when to keep one’s mouth shut, to be precise – and philosophical issues are meat and drink to Isabel Dalhousie, editor of the Review of Applied Ethics. In any case, she’s certain of the ethical basis for a little sleuthing now and again – especially when the problems involve matters of the heart.

Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most prolific and most popular authors. His career has been a varied one: for many years he was a professor of Medical Law and worked in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad. Then, after the publication of his highly successful 'No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency' series, which has sold over twenty million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series of books translated into over forty-six languages and become bestsellers through the world. These include the Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in The Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions series, novels which started life as a delightful (but challenging to write) cross-media serial, written on the website of the Telegraph Media Group. This series won two major cross-media awards - Association of Online Publishers Digital Publishing Award 2009 for a Cross Media Project and the New Media Age award.

In addition to these series, Alexander writes stand-alone books. 2014 sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. This year there will also be a stunning book on Edinburgh, 'A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh'. Earlier stand alone novels include 'La’s Orchestra Saves the World' and 'Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey'.

Alexander is also the author of collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children. He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the Year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds honorary doctorates from nine universities in Europe and North America. In March of 2011 he received an award from the President of Botswana for his services through literature to that country.

Alexander McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh. He is married to a doctor and has two daughters.

*SLEUTHING for Future Choices /OR/ Leaving all to INTUITION?*
Whether you have been reading "The Right Attitude to Rain" . . . "Love Over Scotland" or "Blue Shoes & Happiness" . . . you and your book friends will probably have a discussion eventually . . . about the author! For two of his series, author Alexander McCall Smith has chosenfemale protagonists, and these are women who have strong claims on our hearts. Why is it that these characters 'grab' at readers, albeit with the welcome tentacles of family? Was *AMS* one of a large family, familiar with diverse personalities & inter-play?Not since another strong woman in a British series was described with the phrase "SHE Who Must Be Obeyed" have viewers been so amused and readers so faithful. We recognize traits in "Precious" Ramotswe/OR/Isabel Dalhousie that could have been plucked from our family Tree; endearing like Aunt Lettie who plied her needle in sewing or debate and our outrageous Aunty Flo, close friend of Vachel Lindsay.Author McCall Smith has the same sure hold on our hearts with his 'lay of the land' - - describing places that we may know quite well, or not at all - - they now occupy places in our memory albums, favorite snapshots stuck down with black photo corners. And think of the many trips to Edinburgh that are being plotted now by readers.Reading vol.3 of the series, a friend was provoked by some of Isabel's actions, she who edits a Journal for the morally superior! Perhaps Ms. Dalhousie was confronted by more issues than usual?Or, has the author tried to overcome some of her dowdiness, if that is the word? The young woman who pines for love does sometimes appear closer to 50 than 40. This reader isn't overly stuffy but admits being a whit disturbed by the implication that "a new little Dalhousie" might not bear his father's surname? I noticed that in a blurb for "The Careful Use of Compliments" - - which caused me to read the ending (of "Rain") early-on, a first for that particular sin since childhood. The moral implications of that might fill an entire issue of the philosophical journal Isabel edits. What books are on your List to gather for a summer trip, or hammock-time at home? It would not surprise me if you choose 1 or 2 titles by Alexander McCall Smith. What is it about the Scots, anyway? Jane Yolen (see 6/2/08 NEWSWEEK magazine) is another prolific & delightful writer with a Scot's heart. I'll happily reach for any of their books, and am impatient to turn on the television when the BBC shares their series "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency."But first I'll reach for volume 4, and be charmed into another good read about the fascinating Isabel. There are certain aspects of her housekeeper's character that are intriguing also, don't you think? Tea and Crumpets, anyone?

There are few writers, authors, today that have the ability to capture the special writing technique of writers from the early 20th century. Alexander McCall Smith is certainly one of them. He writes in a style that makes you feel you know his characters, that they are acquaintances or even friends of yours, and he does it in a way that is not wordy nor does he ramble as many even greater better known, "classic" writers of the past. Some of my favorite authors are Charles Dickens, Emily Bronte, Jane Austen...but while they wrote works of great style, import and imaginery, they also could digress to boredom!!

Alexander McCall Smith's style is clever, innovative while still "down to earth" even "folksy" in the way of some earlier American writers. His books are wonderful little gems that give a peek into the lives of characters living in other parts of the world and make one realize that we are all so alike and live our lives in much the same manner with the same interests in what goes on around us every day and for some of us with the same intuitive abilities as his wonderful characters.

It makes me feel it would be a great pleasure to know him, to sit and chat, to know people like his characters!
thank you for the opportunity to review the Isabel Dalhousie Mysteries. I have read all of his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency novels as well....bravo to a wonderful author!!!

Don't read this book for the mystery...read it for the wonderful and literate writing of Alexander McAll Smith, the lovely discriptions of Edinburgh, Scotland and for the gentle philisophical musings of Isabel. In this novel, Isabel (at long last) begins a romance, has a visit from her American cousin, has a terrible argument with her neice, Cat, and does get involved in a small mystery. There is a continuing plot with returning characters. Isabel looks for an apartment for Grace, her housekeeper because Isabel's father has asked Isabel to take care of Grace. Cat has another boyfriend, Patrick, and Isabel doesn't take to him, but she is determined to hold back her opinions of the man. Isabel goes to a weekend house party with Jamie in the country and there she encounters the mystery.

Jamie, Grace, Cat, they're all there to enjoy and there is some charming dialog to savor as well. The nicest thing of all, though, is the development of Isabel's character.

Once again, Smith has produced a stunningly glorious novel that spends its time dealing with both human relationships and ethics; as Smith is wont to do. In a finely crafted piece Smith examines the attitudes toward a relationship between a man and a woman who are separated by 14 years. This plot element is one that Smith has carried over three books now and had to be resolved for the sake of ethical clarity.

With particular finesse, Smith weaves in both the American perspective and the Scottish perspective because "Isabel" is half each and Smith mixed in some visiting American relatives from Texas. He thus created an opportunity to mix and match cultures in this ethical question. The resolution of that question I will leave to the reader as he or she consumes this finely created addition to the "Isabel Dalhousie" series of Smith books.

As always, Smith is clear, with fine and illustrative human experience examples to point out the fine points of ethics, especially as it mixes with real society and real human beings. Nonetheless, his messages are clear and his style is engaging. The book is recommended to all readers of Smith's former works and anyone looking for a quick and interesting take on the societal position of older women being involved with younger men.

I love McCall-Smith, I find his books soothing and wise and feminine yet balanced (this probably comes from their being written by a man!). I always get involved in his characters' lives, care bout them and can't wait to read more about them. Plots are not the point; human interaction and thoughts are, and they are presented with such a light hand, and such an obvious love for life and people and places that I always feel better after spending time with these books. Do not buy the Dalhousie or the Precious Ramotswe series (which I also love) if you want a proper detective story, but do buy them and enjoy them all, possibly in chronological order, if you want to be reconciled with life. Sounds like a lot to ask from books, but read them and you will see what I mean!

Isabel is a 40 something editor of the Review of Applied Ethics with a weakness for being nosy.

In this latest book from Alexander McCall Smith, Isabel's American cousin, Mimi, comes from Texas to visit, with American wit and view-point that makes Isabel consider different aspects of a relationship between (another Texan) millionaire Tom Bruce & his very young fiancee. Isabel continues (from the two previous books) a complex relationship with Jamie & her niece Cat. Jamie is much younger than Isabel and has had a failed romance with Cat.

Description of Edinburgh city life and Isabel's philosophical dilemmas makes for a great read.

Can't wait for the next book because the ending leaves Isabel in a vulnerable situation.

The book is a very pleasant read and I enjoy the central character up to a point, and that is where we part ways. As Hemingway noted, "they find problems where there aren't any." It's very odd. In one particular scene, the central character tells of Russian immigrants grieving from the loss of their culture from Communistic brutality, and yet the same character is continually pressing for solutions that would support that end.

In this third novel in the series, things are Happening in Isabel's life. Things she does not quite understand and things she cannot exactly share with her dear niece, Cat. This book continues my journey into the heart, soul and philosophy of a character with whom I share a common love of ... well, thinking things through, and interpreting them. Maybe far, far too much. Isabel thinks too much. So do I. And so, of course, she has become a fast friend of mine as I trudge through the novels with great enjoyment!

5.0 out of 5 stars That the heroine is the delightful Isabel Dalhousie
Reviewed in Canada on April 12, 2023
This is a continuation of the series which details the life of philosopher Isabel Dalhousie who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. She cannot resist the appeal of solving problems of others. The author paints a picture of a delightful heroine who often finds her mind wandering in to philosophical issues as she talks with friends or delves into mysteries. Her friend Jamie is often warning her about getting involved but she can't resist and often feels it is her duty to help sort out the problems of others.

McCall Smith è uno degli autori migliori per distrarsi dalle difficoltà quotidiane. E' molto prolifico e scrive almeno 2-3 libri all'anno nelle varie serie. Isabel Dalhousie è una delle mie protagoniste preferite e "The right attitude to rain" è uno dei romanzi che mi è piaciuto di più.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comfortable book to read at bedtime
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 25, 2008
I started with book 4 of the series and then read 1, 2 and this one (no 3). I'm hooked and will have to order number 5! These books are perfect for bed-time reading. You enter the gentle world of genteel Edinburgh following life's up and downs of a nice forty-something woman (Isabel Dalhousie). She has inherited wealth and has a part-time job as an editor of a philosophy journal so has time to ponder the world around her and be a bit of an amateur detective. It's all very engaging and charming and doesn't keep you awake at night. I think these books will have a particular appeal to those of us who are familiar with the parts of Edinburgh and Scottish Borders in which these books are set.
It would be best to read the books in chronological order as there is an evolving story in Isabel's personal life that unfolds over the series.
