Apollonius of Tyana the Philosopher Reformer of the First Century A.D. is a book written by G.R.S. Mead. The book is a comprehensive study of the life and teachings of Apollonius of Tyana, a philosopher and reformer who lived in the first century A.D. The author explores the historical context in which Apollonius lived, including the political and cultural climate of the time. Mead also delves into the philosophical and religious beliefs of Apollonius, examining his teachings on ethics, spirituality, and mysticism. The book also includes a detailed account of the travels and adventures of Apollonius, as well as his encounters with various historical figures, including the emperor Nero. Through his analysis, Mead presents Apollonius as a significant figure in the history of philosophy and spirituality, whose teachings continue to be relevant today. With the exception of the Christ no more interesting personage appears upon the stage of Western history in those early years. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Apollonius of Tyana was a Pagan holy man who traveled the world from Spain to India and back, from the time of Jesus through most of the First Century AD, visiting Roman and Greek cult leaders, Egyptian priest and Indian Buddhists, urging the purification and reform of their religions.

Who was Apollonius of Tyana? A mystic, philosopher, wandering pythagorean teacher. There is practically no collection about his philosophy and even some basic principles are not agreed by researchers. This book is about one of the most controversial philosopher of ancient culture, but as a mystic and a wanderer, Apollonius does not suit to the status of common philosopher, like Plato or Aristotle. It was especially interesting to read about the speculations of his trips to India and perhaps also to Nepal.

The question about Apollonius is after all, unanswered. While to someone remind us about the striking similarities between Apollonius and Jesus, another is sure he is just a hoax and never really existed, but this books represents some of the rumors we think that we know about this mysterious man. Marginal, inconsistent, but also curious reading for all philosophers and historians.

Apollonius of Tyana was a teacher and religious reformer. He performed miracles including cures and overcame death. This caused the people of the time to compare Apollonius to Jesus. A fascinating read!

This is more of a travel log than a discourse on the philosophies of Apollonius and where exactly he gleaned his beliefs. Author, (Mead), seems to be in disbelief of much of the things written of Apollonius. Not exactly what I was looking for.

a good cheap version of this book . although i dont think is G.R.S. meads best work
its good and one of the few books written on the subject .
G.R.S. mead of course takes a very theosphical view here . its good but it feels disjointed .
mead also does not go deep enough.

I know I am going to like reading this book as it was recommended by another book I recently read, however, I haven't even started it yet, too many other books jumped in line ahead of it so it patiently awaits my return to it in due time. I'll be happy to write a more complete review at that time.

I am very glad I read this book, however, I certainly wish we knew more about Apollonius of Tyana because he seems like he brought good things to this world.
