This was recommended to me as a study book for my intro to Judaism, and we have relied heavily on passages throughout this book for this course. Gives some valuable insight into the history, beliefs, and religion of the Jewish people.

This book is stupid and most of it is a big citation of the Torah. You might as well buy a Torah with comments. The explainations are lazy and ambiguous. Over all badly written and boring to follow as most of is a copy and paste from the Torah with stupid comments.

This book includes a thematic selection of Jewish texts from all of the important sources of Tradition, the bible, the Talmud, and the more recent scholars works. Hertzel provides excellent if brief interpretation. My one gripe is that each selection is not necessarily introduced, but just flows with the book.
