The Last Trail is a classic western novel by Zane Grey, published in 1909. It is set in the frontier town of Fort Henry, where a conflict arises between the settlers and the Native American tribes. The story revolves around a young frontiersman named Jonathan Zane, who is tasked with protecting the settlers from the warring tribes. Along the way, he falls in love with a beautiful woman named Helen Sheppard, who is also caught in the middle of the conflict. As tensions rise and violence erupts, Jonathan and Helen must navigate the dangerous terrain and fight for their survival. The Last Trail is a thrilling adventure filled with action, romance, and vivid descriptions of the American West. It is a timeless classic that captures the spirit of the Wild West and the struggle for survival on the frontier.1909. Here is a Zane Grey thriller that is far more than just another Western. It has all the swiftness of pace, the hair-trigger action that stamp the work of this master of adventure. But it is also a genuine and vivid chronicle of frontier days along the Ohio when a cocked rifle and a soft step were the surest ways to long life. From the first chapter-when an Easterner and his daughter, lost in the Ohio wilderness, are rescued from hostile Indians by Jonathan Zane and his companion, a strange and terrible figure whom few pioneers saw but of whom all knew, The Last Trail mounts in ever-increasing excitement and suspense. It is Zane Grey at his best-need one say more? Grey - once a dentist (like Doc Holliday) did more to create and shape of view of the west than any other writer, and his remains - even till today - as one of the most popular. As the world moves to tweets and twats, Facebooks and drive-bys, one can only see the calling of the great outdoors, of the west, of adventure and real life.
One of Zane's most loved novels, (there were so many!), about good old western topics like fighting Indians!!! One of the best and most compelling western novelists, Grey could spin a yarn, and tell a darn good story. If you long for those days, no matter your age, or if you are a city dweller or a country person, you will find excitement, peace, contentment and adventure with this book.

This film shows Tom Mix,Tony "The Wonder Horse",and Fox Studio's excellent production values when they were all in top silent movie form. It has action, excitement, romance, comedy and drama without compromise. The only thing it does not have is dialogue. But it does have a musical sound track composed of a repetitious piano. Using good symphonic music instead would have been a big plus.

Tom Mix was a rugged, dashing, fearless individual who actually performed his own stunts. The cameramen were careful to film in such a way as to clearly show this. The few times that he did not do his own stunts were limited. One example is in his last movie "The Miracle Rider"(1935). By this time his old injuries from doing his own stunts plus his age(55) were dictating the wisdom of utilizing the talents of younger stunt men.

Sadly a fire in the film storage vault of Twentith Century Fox in 1937 destroyed most of their silent and early sound films. Because of this most of the best work of Tom Mix has been lost. However, we do have a few of his better films still in existence. These were apparently copies that were in the hands of executives, or maybe still in limited circulation on the theater circuit or just sitting on someones shelf. Unfortunately, these copies are usually well worn. There are also some copies known to exist in at least one foreign country.

In short, if you like silent movies, westerns in particular, and would like to see the man who was said to be the highest paid actor in Hollywood in the nineteen twenties and a legend even today you may want to check out The Last Trail staring Tom Mix.

This book is not easy to review. Keep in mind, it was written in 1906. You can't expect enlarged views about minority groups, even from the narrator's POV. Add to that the fact that Mr. Grey is writing about his own antecedents (the Zanes), who were instrumental in wresting the beautiful Ohio Valley from the "savages". Jonathan Zane is the main character. His side kick, Lew Wetzel, after whom Wetzel County was named, also plays a large part. The two bordermen (poor man's versions of Daniel Boone) are on the trail of hoss thieves, girl kidnappers and general riffraff (with a handful of red shirt "Injuns" thrown into the mix). The Shawnee should sue this guy's estate for defamation of character. Jonathan Zane is mesmerized by a woman, who urges him to give up his ridge running for other far more entertaining pastimes. But first he must put paid to two rivals, each who is attempting to steal his bride. All works out in the end--sort of. Those from the Wheeling area will enjoy this piece of little known (if heavily romanticized) history. Anyone with a drop of Native American blood will be horrified by the casual way the Ohio Valley settlers reflect upon the moment of future glory when their red-skinned neighbors are "gone", i.e. dead or driven from their homes.
