Atheism in Pagan Antiquity is a book written by A. B. Drachman that explores the concept of atheism in ancient pagan societies. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the religious beliefs and practices of ancient Greeks and Romans and examines the role of atheism in these societies. Drachman argues that atheism was not a new concept in ancient times and that there were individuals who rejected the traditional gods and beliefs of their cultures. The book also explores the reasons for atheism in ancient times, including philosophical, social, and political factors. The author draws on a wide range of sources, including ancient texts and artifacts, to provide a detailed and nuanced understanding of atheism in pagan antiquity. Overall, Atheism in Pagan Antiquity is an insightful and thought-provoking exploration of a fascinating topic that sheds new light on the history of religion and belief.1922. This book is the outcome of a request to write an article on atheism for a projected dictionary of the religious history of classical antiquity. While doing research, the author decided this subject might well deserve a more comprehensive treatment and this is what he attempts to do. Contents: conception and treatment of denial of the gods in antiquity, accounts of deniers; naive criticism of popular religion, Xenophanes; ionic naturalism, Diagoras; Sophistic and his influence; Socrates and the Socratics; hellenism; period of the Roman Empire; Middle Ages and recent times; retrospect. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Content is 5-star. Because it is an19th Century text, the delivery is sometimes convoluted and obtuse. Reading 19th century writing is an (often painful) acquired taste. The author very thoroughly goes through ancient Greek and Roman indications of atheism (defined for this book as the denial of the gods). As a consequence, this book offers a very good overview of Hellenistic, Sophistic, Roman and other ancient philosophies. But, as the title suggests, it is from the viewpoint of looking for weaknesses in the armor of then-popular religious beliefs. Overall, a very good book, but one that requires deliberate attention to what you are reading.

It's not what you might think (or at least hope for). The definition of Atheism is so broad that even Christians or Jews or Muslims would qualify. And the writing style is like a very stuffy academic lecture that only those required to attend would pay attention to. Nothing whatever to draw the reader forward. I could not finish it, and I am usually fascinated by any book about ancient beliefs, thus the minimum rating.
