I am not sure how I stumbled upon this book but I am glad that I did. Well researched history of Jews life during medieval times and beyond.. The author cites both religious and secular sources providing a wealth of information in a well written, easily understandable late 19th-century British English style. Jewish Life is not chronological, it is written by topic. This allows you to read the sections that pique your interest most. Overall, a thoughly enjoyable book.

This is a photocopy reproduction of the original, not a reset; as such, the pages are stark and the type is difficult to read. I'd have done better checking one out of the library and copying it myself. I'd go to another source for this book.

The Jewish Middle Ages are too often used as a rhetorical weapon. This pogrom, that crusade are used to justify the perception of Jews as victims with all the benefits this receives in the modern world.

Thankfully, Israel Abrahams depicts the persecutions but balances this with a description of vibrant cultural life. From the games of children to the regulation of marriages to the customs around burial, Abrahams describes a thriving community.

His narrative is that, as the Middle Ages wore on, increasing persecution from the magisterial figures of the Church led to this culture’s diminishment. This does not mean, however, that it did not exist.

If I had one criticism of this book is that it describes medieval Jewry in an almost unflinching optimistic light. The position of women, hardly defensible to moderns, is elided over and excused. But can one truly blame the author when so many other authors focus on blood-libels, crusades and other mechanisms of oppression and torture?

A welcome description of a now long forgotten culture. Recommended reading both for Jews and those with an interest in Semitic history.

The title tells the story. If this subject is interesting to you, Israel Abrahams has left you a classic. It may be old, but it's still in print. That tells you something. I haven't been able to find anything better on the subject.

This is a tour of Jewish life in the Middle Ages (12th-18th century). It is themat so that is examines attitudes towards the Synagouge in one chapter and examines the attitude of Jews towards the Slave trade and other occupations in another area. It examines all facets of Jewish life from communal life to Rabbis, occupation, family life, marriage and clothing.

A fascinating view into the life of Jews in Europe in the Middle Ages that shows the incredible diversity and depth of the Jewish community and shows how much we can learn about their culture and how they coped in a world that was often unsteady and insecure.
