Macedonia Passage, set in 1984, is a modern-day sailing adventure with a touch of Balkan politics and a hint of romance.   The original captain and cook have mysteriously disappeared and a sinister cargo is hidden in the yacht's bilges. When Captain Frank Brown joins the schooner crossing the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean for the owners, things begin to heat up. The beautiful and enigmatic Turkish intelligence agent, Nevser Chase, joins Brown and his crew as they work to figure out just what kind of adventure and danger they're in, who they can trust, and how they can stay alive.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The hardback edition of MACEDONIA PASSAGE is no longer supported by Amazon. We now offer a trade paperback edition and hope to have an Audible version of the book soon. In the meantime, please private message the author via facebook, Wright Gres or Macedonia Passage.

About the Author

Wright Gres grew up in Tampa, Florida, sailing on Hillsborough Bay, Tampa Bay, and the Florida gulf coast. Helping to finance college expenses at University of Florida, he worked as a deckhand on private yachts, as well as other summer jobs. Later, while working a regular nine-to-five, he served as a crewmember assisting in sail training on the brig Unicorn. He spent several years delivering yachts up and down the east coast and around the Caribbean. He was Marine Coordinator in the Robert Altman film, The Gingerbread Man. He crewed six months on a stays'l schooner, making a transatlantic and cruising in the Mediterranean. This trip became the basis for Macedonia Passage.

Wright Gres grew up in Tampa, Florida, graduated from University of Florida, and worked a number of jobs including as a printer, and in the advertising agency business.

You know the author is writing his own copy here, right?

In 1983 he walked away from a good paying job in corporate America and wondered, what next?

He signed on as a deckhand on a large stays'l schooner making a transatlantic and cruising with the owner and owner's party in the Mediterranean for six months. A journal of this experience eventually led to his writing MACEDONIA PASSAGE, a novel of adventure and intrigue. Much of the descriptions of the people, places, and sailing experiences in the book are reflections from that adventure, though he is hasty to add, most of the arson, kidnapping, murder, and, oh yeah, intrigue were born of his imagination.

He currently lives on the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia (and dreams, of having homes in the Hamptons, southern France, and St Croix. You know, like the giants in our industry.)

He is a tugboat captain and continues to write.

His second novel, THE EMPTY GRAVE, comes close on the heels of his first, only a decade or so later. THE EMPTY GRAVE is a stand alone novel, though the readers of MACEDONIA PASSAGE will enjoy following Captain Frank Brown, Turkish Intelligence Agent Nevser Akkaya Chase, and South Korean deckhand Chang-Ki as they unite two years later in search of a WWII war criminal and attempt to recover a huge treasure for the Greek people from whom it was stolen.

Wright has written a wonderfully descriptive thriller taking place during a sailing voyage through the Mediterranean, Greek islands and Turkey. He has created distinctive and sympathetic characters with an engaging plot line that keeps the story moving swiftly along. It is an enjoyable read and I recommend it.

Beginning to end a good read. I can’t wait for Gres’s next book to be available. Entertaining, educational and believable. I couldn’t put this book down.

Loved both of the books by this author! Hoping he writes a third.

I enjoyed reading this for the fact that I have spent much time around the water and on the sea. The "saltiness" of the characters is real and the inability of the captive crew to escape their vessel, a distinct possibility.

Macedonia Passage had some very exciting and some very enteresting twists. It kept me reading to discover what the next turn would bring.

Macedonia Passage: Dangerous Cargo is a sweeping adventure that takes the reader, right along with the colorful cast of characters, on a wild ride across the Atlantic and on to the Mediterranean Sea.

When Frank Brown, a widowed, wearied Vietnam vet takes on the job as skipper of the Belle Tata, he immediately asks mate Mike Long what happened to the former captain and cook, but neither Long nor anyone else has the answers. Uneasy yet determined to go forth with his new job, Brown lines up three applicants to replace the cook, but two of them mysteriously disappear before their scheduled interviews. The curious man Brown is left to hire, George Savastano, is the last man anyone would want to know.

Not long after the luxury schooner sets sail, Frank Brown and his crew discover cargo hidden in the bilges. They soon learn that the owners of the dangerous stash mean business -- mean business, and Brown and his crew must do everything in their power to delicately balance the appearance of normalcy and stay alive. As the situation becomes more precarious, the beautiful Turkish intelligence agent, Nevser Akkaya Chase, joins them but Brown isn't sure what to make of her, either.

Author Wright Gres has written a well-paced, intricately plotted novel that instantly captivates the reader. His extensive knowledge of sailing creates a vivid portraiture of high seas travel, but his clear, readable prose makes for absorbing reading even for those with little or no knowledge of the nautical world. Macedonia Passage is a take-me-away read that compels the reader to not only root for the good guys, but to become emotionally invested in their ultimate fate.
