Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2007
Emily Walsh spends most of her time in service to others - either working in the family store or involved in the various church activities. Her nights she spends alone, dreaming of a man she's never seen. At twenty-four years of age, life has become dull and monotonous. Until now.

Noah Barton is a new minister visiting in Trumble. He's staying with the local reverend while he searches for a church and community to settle in. Noah's attractive, young and eligible. He draws the young women of the community to him, but Noah's only interested in the woman he'd met while out walking through the woods.

Emily is entering her thoughts into a diary when she admits to herself that her life is empty. She's afraid her whole life is going to be exactly the same. She'd once had a beau, he'd even spoken to her father about his intentions, but he'd died while abroad and no other suitor has ever compared to him. Emily has been in mourning for her mother for the past six months. Watching the other girls in their pretty dresses reminds Emily of the beautiful dress she'd purchased for herself before her mother's death. One Saturday while Emily's father is running the store Emily decides to forgo the mourning colors and wear her yellow dress for a walk to her special place in the woods. She's been reading for several minutes when a stranger finds her. It's the man she's seen in her dreams. His name is Noah Barton. Emily doesn't discover that he's a minister, and very popular with the girls of the community until she attends church. Emily has selflessly given of herself to everyone around her, but doesn't seem to think she's good enough for Noah. In addition to her already confused emotions, her father is pushing her to marry another man in the community who's looking for a mother for his children.

THE PATH TAKEN is a very sweet story centering around a small community and the people who live there. Gossip and speculation combine to cause Emily hurt and jealousy, possibly resulting in her losing the love of her life. D. K. Abbott did a beautiful job incorporating family secrets into the storyline that fascinated me and enables the reader to see the characters as real people with flaws and desires.
