About the Author

Janet M. Magiera has been studying the Peshitta for over 25 years and has developed an entire database of the New Testament, which will generate an interlinear, concordance, parallel translations, and lexicon, as well as the Light of the Word Ministry translation. Her database is currently being published with BibleWorks software, soon to be released. Magiera is an ordained minister and has been teaching Bible studies and classes throughout the country.

Janet Magiera is an ordained minister and the founder of Light of the Word Ministry, a ministry dedicated to teaching and making known the understanding of the Aramaic language, figures of speech and customs of the Bible. For over 38 years, she has taught in Bible fellowships and churches in the United States and other countries. In 1990, Jan began compiling a database of the Aramaic Peshitta New Testament. It has been developed as a software module by BibleWorks and is also available online at www.aramaicdb.lightofword.org. In 2006 she published The Aramaic Peshitta New Testament Translation, the first book of a complete Aramaic Peshitta New Testament Library. The library includes an interlinear, lexicon, concordance, Messianic version and parallel translations. Jan has also authored topical books on Biblical subjects.

This is the western Aramaic translation of the Peshitta. This goes great with George Lamsa's translation. The English translation is ok but it seems to have a very modern slant of our English language. More contemporary like ESV, Contemporary English version, New Living Translation and New Century Version. Still a good version to compare Lamsa's and this work. That way you get the Eastern and Western Aramaic version in English from two sources.

During the time of Jesus three languages were in use: Latin was the official language, Greek was the common language in Galilee of the Gentiles and Aramaic was the mother tongue of the majority of Jews, while Hebrew was the language of the Rabbis. Certainly Jesus was multilingual and used whichever language was appropriate but Aramaic must have been his primary language. Likewise the apostles also must have been trilingual with Aramaic being their mother tongue, but they certainly must have communicated in whichever language was appropriate for the occasion.
There are subtle, and sometimes significant differences between this Aramaic translation and the NIV. On example being in Mat 6:13 where the NIV reads "....and lead us not into temptation...."; and the
Aramaic Peshitta translation reads: "Do not let us enter into trial....". For me, the NIV translation places the burden of going astray on God while the Aramaic Peshitta translation puts the burden of going astray squarely on the believer where it should be.

A beautifully printed text with footnotes and with additional information on figures of speach and idioms. Easy to read modern English. I bought it because, at the time, I favoured the theory that the Gospels were originally Aramaic. I'm less convinced now but it's useful to have another perspective on the New Testament.
