I've been playing guitar since 1986. I currently own 30 guitars. This book and the Next stage tutorial books are the best beginner instructional books I have ever seen for guitar. The presentation of this material is so logical and not intimidating. I think all guitarists should know the material in these two books. My first instructional books back in 1986 were some Hal Leonard easy play songs with a cassette tape. This instruction book does not have songs or play along material but it is still an excellent must have book for any upcoming guitarist. There was talk a long time ago about a third book that follows after the Next stage book. This series is great for chords but it needed more instruction on scales to play on the fretboard. Maybe Chris Lopez ran out of ideas for a third book.

I like many others, own many 'how to play guitar' books. The vast majority of these books are either overly technical for the beginner, or present incomplete information that demands prior knowledge of guitar theory. This book presents chords (open and barre) in easy to read diagrams, along with progressions that take the guess work out of what chords sound good together. Of the many books I own, this, along Chris'other book,"The Next Stage Guitar Book", are my favorites. Rather than reinventing the wheel and taking years to learn the information presented in this book by trial and error, I'd suggest buying this book. It's like a treasure map that will simplify the guitar, and more importantly, allow you to have some fun rather than drown in years and years of theory before being able to play anything.

This was the first book I used to get started from scratch. The reason I like it is that it has NO songs, so it took the pressure off having to learn a song, yet the 4 chord sequences sound quite good (according to my wife). It includes barre chords, but also alterative figuring to barre chords, so you can learn them slowly/progresively without pressure. The other book a bought (for songs) is "The Complete Guitarist" by Russ Shipton

My husband wanted to be a rockstar. Gee his hair out and I got him a guitar and this book. He continued to be a need but with long hair and no damn guitar skillz. So I take a star for giving my husband a mullet.

I bought this book about three months ago and although it is a good place to get started, it does have a few mistakes. I'm now taking lessons and have learned that a few of the chord patterns in the book are inaccurate and/or wrong. For example, the book shows the correct finger pattern for an "A" major chord but does not omit the 6th string (open "E" note) from the chord diagram, thus leading you to believe the note should be played as part of the chord. My intructor corrected me the first time I played the chord. The mistake appears to be a simple publishing error but of course you can't know this if you are a beginner like myself. All things considered, the book was helpful in getting started and I was able to learn a few helpful chords before my lessons began. If you purchase this book, and are not familiar with how each chord is formulated, I would recommend veryfing the finger patterns against another source before you become too comfortable playing the chords.

My grandson was over joyed with this book. He is practicing more and really pleased with his results. I told him to let me know when he is ready for the next book.

My first thought on this book when I opened it was, "did they send me a rip off copied version?" For $13 the Spiral Bound book looks like someone photo copied and bound this book themselves and resold it. As for the information inside...it is fairly informative and definitely tells you everything you need to know as a beginner. But the book does not flow very well. Someone with zero knowledge about the guitar would have a hard time learning anything from this book. It's great for beginners with a little bit of knowledge already, or for those who would like a book for quick references.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of "First Stage Guitar Book".

I bought this book because my guitar teacher was using it to teach me Barre Chords. It is easy to follow, and, if you make the effort, it has a lot of really useful info contained between the covers. The bottom line is that my Barre Chords have improved enormously, but, as usual, it requires a lot of practice and repetition - a point emphasised in the book. I will almost certainly buy the next book in the series.
