Purchase options and add-ons

1949 St. Paul, MN - that hopeful post-war era where streetcars graced the city, drive-ins bloomed, the internet and shopping centers didn't exist and people hadn't yet fled to the suburbs.

Upon this fertile urban landscape, Stanley West has set his rich, profoundly touching novel, the gripping story of young Cal Gant, who, despite the shelter of his idyllic life, his rollicking friends, and the mesmerizing girl he loves, stumbles onto and unthinkable lair of violence, terror and murder.

When the haunting Gretchen Luttermannn draws him into a strange and secret lie, he finds himself in a heart-stopping struggle with her brutal father, leading Cal to the brink of self-doubt, terror and death itself, where he must find within himself the backbone and daring to stand against the horror.

When he refuses to turn away, the heart-shattering choices he makes and the terrifying path he takes will raise hairs on the back of your neck, leave a catch in your throat and bring your heart to its feet, cheering.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Stanley West's novel Amos (produced as a CBS Movie of the Week starring Kirk Douglas) stirred national controversy over abuse of the aged in America. When Kirk Douglas testified before congress and wrote in the New York Times on the issue, he pointed out that animals had been protected by law for one hundred years before children or the aged. West's Amos focused on the aged; his current novel exposes the other horn of that disgrace. --From the Publisher

Besides entertaining, I believe a work of fiction can remind us of who we want to be, set us back on course, arouse our goodness and courage and compassion. A novel can point to true north on our inner compass. I hope Until They Bring The Streetcars Back does exactly that. --From the Author

An accelerating ride, an exhilarating journey of the heart, a gratifying triumph of the spirit. A poignant love story that quietly grabs the reader by the throat and doesn't let go until, in the end, it has you by the heart.

Stanley West, an extraordinary novelist and storyteller who writes with searing beauty and truth, has written a lyrical and moving novel. . . a story that pierces to the core of life. . . compelling reading for people of all times and places. . .--Richard Wheeler, winner of the 1996 Golden Spur Award, author of some thirty novels.

I loved it; couldn't put it down. A rich, gripping, heartwarming story that brings to light the unnoticed lives that are quietly and magnificently heroic. --Harvey Mackay, author of Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive and Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty. --From the Back Cover

Such a great book; it’s a beautiful copy of the book. Perfect gift for anyone who loves history and a great story all rolled up into one. The book will grip you from the first page! I’ve given it as a gift many times, and everyone has loved it.

Until They Bring The Street Cars Back" was absolutely amazing. I haven't read a book that occupied my brain(when I was not reading) as this one in a long time. I could not wait to get back to it. It was gripping and tense in spots, and not predictable. I love his writing. This is only the second book of his that I have read, and can not wait to read more.

I love all of the books that Stanley Gordon West wrote, but this is one of my favorites. West’s books are full of characters that you will love and adventures that we all have had. I bet you can’t read this one without falling in love with Cal.

I picked this book for my book club, it was recommended to me from some coworkers. I enjoyed the book and thought it was a quick and easy read. In my book club we always rate our books on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest); the rating in my club was '8'. I thought the story was well written and colorfully discriptive. There's also a part in the middle of the book that is a real page - turner and if you read this, you won't be able to put this book down until you get through that part! One complaint from my book club was that the story line was too neatly done and it all fell into place too simply, you would have to judge for yourself. This won't be the best book you'll ever read, but you won't regret having spent the time to read it. Last of all, I would recommend this book to others.

I have actually read this book twice. It was the first book for our neighborhood Book Club. And 5 years later I reread it.

Being from the Minneapolis area, I could see in my mind the streets that were talked about and learned a lot about the politics of changing from streetcars to bus transportation.
There is mystery and intrigue all in a factual setting.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I bought two extra copies to give as gifts!

Entertaining book about life before automation and the more simple, albeit complicated lives people led. Lots of well-drawn characters, and the City itself is its own character. As someone now living in St Paul, I enjoyed the local references and imaging what life was like during those times.

This was a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. It certainly revealed a lot about a family during the days of streetcars, and why streetcars disappeared so fast. It would be good for teenagers as well as adults to read. I was reminded of another favorite, Lake Wobegon Days by Garrison Keillor.
