An extraordinary, powerful connection exists between feeling and feeding that, if damaged, may lead to one relying on food for emotional support, rather than seeking authentic happiness. This unique workbook takes on the seven emotions that plague problem eaters — guilt, shame, helplessness, anxiety, disappointment, confusion, and loneliness — and shows readers how to embrace and learn from their feelings. Written with honesty and humor, the book explains how to identify and label a specific emotion, the function of that emotion, and why the emotion drives food and eating problems. Each chapter has two sets of exercises: experiential exercises that relate to emotions and eating, and questionnaires that provoke thinking about and understanding feelings and their purpose. Supplemental pages help readers identify emotions and chart emotional development. The final part of the workbook focuses on strategies for disconnecting feeling from food, discovering emotional triggers, and using one’s feelings to get what one wants out of life.

I am a psychotherapist, educator, international author, and an expert on the psychology of eating--the how and why, not the what, of it. For more than three decades, my mission has been to help people with eating and weight concerns learn to eat "normally" and develop a positive, healthy relationship with food and their bodies. My therapy practice is in Sarasota, FL and I also do tele-therapy in state. As a recovered chronic dieter and binge-eater, I meld my personal recovery wisdom with my professional knowledge and extensive clinical experience to resolve eating problems.

My books are: Helping Doctors Outsmart Overeating, Starting Monday, Nice Girls Finish Fat, The Rules of "Normal" Eating, Outsmarting Overeating, The Food and Feelings Workbook, and What Every Therapist Needs to Know about Treating Eating and Weight Issues.

This is a great book to help you stretch your mind into new pathways and to learn about feelings which are the core of eating problems. Any book that invites you to pick it up again and again because you want to feel better about your eating is a true gift to readers. The Food & Feelings Workbook is an excellent companion to the book, Not Your Mother's Diet available only on amazon. And I encourage you to move past any feelings of discouragement and do something wonderful for you self esteem right now. Not Your Mother's Diet: The CURE for your EATING ISSUES

I have read a fair share of books about disordered eating, and this may be my favorite, because it is SOOOOO effective at actually shifting me out of compulsive eating when I have a relapse. The weird thing is that I have had this book for 4 or 5 years, and I've used it a lot, but I haven't actually read the whole thing or written in the whole thing. It may be that I was already on my way to recovery when I got it, so I wasn't as deeply in the food addiction, but I've used a section of it, read it, done the exercises, written in it where you're supposed to - it helps you to feel your feelings, exactly what you need to do to stop using food to avoid feelings. It's so smart - it really helps you relate to you feelings and your thinking patterns - in a deeper way than many of the other resources out there, specifically focusing on the feelings and thought patterns common in people who use food for self soothing. WHenever I slip into some self soothing with food, I grab this book off the shelf and it helps me get back on track.

Great self help book for BED people

Karen R.Koenig again does a great job with reasonable strategies on how to help yourself is you have any weight issues, or eating disorders. It can be used as a tool to help clients if you are a therapist, but it is written in easy, accessible language to anyone who wants to use a self help book to learn how to eat healthier, instead of "mindless binging", or to stop using food as a way to self sooth, such as eating when stressed, sad, angry. It helps a person by using extremely easy charts to start to become more aware of identifying WHAT they may have been feeling at a particular time of the day, and HOW they responded with eating habits. This makes a person STOP, and THINK about their habits, and offers specific ways to combat food addiction/eating disorders. Highly recommended. Karen.R. Koenig is a very seasoned therapist in treating easting disorders, and has an excellent reputation.

This is a very easy to follow self-help book. I plan on using it for eating disorder clients as adjunctive to therapy but would be appropriate for anyone who has issues with their relationship with food and especially those with a disconnect between their feelings and using food as a coping skill.

I've worked with folks who struggle with eating disorders for nearly 3 years now. This workbook continues to be my favorite. The material is insightful, approachable, and meaningful. I like that it even has some humor in it (and it's not cheesy). This workbook is so good that I'm even going to lead a woman's self care group, with this workbook as the central focus. It's a helpful piece of work for anyone, not only the eating disorder recovery community. Thank you Karen! Your work is powerful medicine!

I've just received my copy and am SO excited! I've been working in it every night. I've always known that my eating is connected to emotions, but I really couldn't figure out anything deeper than that. This workbook helps you get to the "under layers" of whats going on..... identifying what feelings specifically you are trying to avoid and helping you to understand WHY you've been doing this for so long. It also addresses reviewing where your old beliefs come from and creating new ones to help you behave differently now. I was excited to see this come out, since I have such a great opinion of Karen's book "The Rules of Normal Eating", which at times was so close to the truth of how I think and operate- I laughed out loud. If you're willing to get serious about addressing the emotional reasons for your eating habits, I'd certainly recommend investing in this workbook.

The author believes that once you figure out emotions it will fix food, and that your body knows your healthy weight better than you do. Well their are so many other factors besides emotions that contribute to emotional eating such as sugar is addictive, for some bread is addictive, biologically what Happens with cravings after you eat a cookie (they increase), habits, tiredness level, less protein/ less veggies means more cravings, and neurotransmitter level. This book is a GREAT step in helping you solve your eating issues but it’s not going to fix it completely. Although, I would recommend purchasing it as part of your journey because the concept of emotions needs at least a book and not just a chapter.

Anyone who has been in therapy for disordered eating for any amount of time has heard the cliche "you need to get in touch with your feelings." Unfortunately, most therapists are not able to break down the process of emotional regulation into simple enough steps to teach it as a skill. Karen Koenig can, and does beautifully in this workbook. For over a decade I have read nearly every book on the market dealing with disordered eating, and this is hands-down the best HOW TO manual to teach people how to deal with their feelings around food, an essential process for recovery. It is full of exercises to do and she explains everything in basic terms that are easy to follow. You will know it is working because you will have triggers on every page. Keep with it, this book will help you!

The book is difficult to read in that I found myself more stressed out by reading it. It digs very, very deep. She knows what she is talking about but I would highly recommend therapy and other kinds of counselling such as group therapy. And talk to your therapist to see if the book is right for you. I can only read it in small chunks. I am also on her online group where she makes posts once a week (approx.) which says a lot to me and that she is truly dedicated and committed to her patients and path in life. Thank you.
