Ride Smart: Improve Your Horsemanship Skills On The Ground And In The Saddle Paperback – August 1, 2004

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

Under one title, Craig Cameron brings together a thorough look at horses and their nature and good, solid horsemanship skills that suit both novice and experienced riders. The book is divided into sections, each dealing with a different aspect of horsemanship. The first delves into the psychological and physical realities of horses as a species and how man can best understand them to develop a positive, partnering relationship with them. Other sections cover groundwork, including early handling, round-pen exercises, and riding techniques that enable the horse to perform basic as well as intricate maneuvers. Each chapter includes interesting sidebars that complement the main text. Sidebars include "True Story," an anecdote or story that relates to the chapter's subject matter; "Here's How," a tip that pertains to the chapter's focus, and "A Better Way," a troubleshooting section that offers a step-by-step exercise people can do to work the horse through a problem noted in the chapter.

From the Back Cover

Craig Cameron has one of the most loyal followings of any horsemanship clinician and for good reason. Participants who come to his clinics not only get what they came for (a knowledge of horses and horsemanship), but they're also entertained throughout their learning experience. His clinic-goers have clamored for a book and here it is.
Under one title, Craig Cameron brings together a thorough look at horses and good, solid horsemanship skills that suit both novice and experienced riders. In the early chapters he delves into the psychological and physical realities of horses as a species and how man can best understand them to develop a positive, partnering relationship with the horse.
Next, Cameron covers tack and equipment, horse selection and equitation basics, including exercises to develop a good seat in the saddle, as well as bareback.
In the ground-work chapters, he describes effective ground-handling techniques, including round-pen exercises, hobble-breaking methods and longe-line skills.
In the under-saddle portion of the book, Cameron takes the reader from the first ride on a green colt all the way through to high-performance maneuvers, such as stops, lead changes, rollbacks and turnarounds.
Each chapter includes interesting sidebars that complement the main text. They include: "True Story," personal anecdotes from Cameron's life experience; "Here's How," gentle and helpful training tips; and "A Better Way," troubleshooting sections that provide solutions to common horse-handling problems.
Because of his 20-plus years' experience ranching and rodeoing, Cameron is known as the "Cowboy's Clinician." With his original, entertaining and motivational style, he's regularly sought by television, radio, magazines, fairs, ranch rodeos, concerts, universities and many celebrities. Traveling and working out of his Texas and New Mexico ranches, he starts hundreds of colts each year and gives horsemanship clinics on reining, starting horses on cattle and problem-solving. He's built his reputation on understanding the true nature of horses, and his humane training methods eliminate rough handling. That philosophy and those methods are what Cameron offers on the pages of Ride Smart.

This review comes from a novice rider. I have been taking weekly lessons for a little over a year -- in English riding. Thus, I think it says something for this book that I read it cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it is western focused.

The book begins by teaching you about horse psychology, horseman psychology, and equipement, then offers advice on selecting a horse, followed by several chapters of advice on riding. After this, about half way through the book, it begins to teach training methods, and chapter by chapter carries you from first putting a halter on the horse all the way through advanced maneuvers and trailer loading.

Each chapter contains many sidebars with extra hints and tips, explanations of the purpose of some of the techniques, and personal anecdotes that reinforce the lessons and demonstrate the importance of them.

If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, then this book contains several extra volumes withing its pages. It is filled with large, color, quality pictures that clearly show the author himself doing the things he teaches.

Craig Cameron teaches natural horsemanship. You won't find advice on striking your horse in this book. One of his mottos is to make "the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard," not painful.

When I do venture into western riding, I will be much better prepared for it by having read this book. I highly recommend it to riders of any discipline, at any level of training. Even if you never ride western and never train a horse of your own, you will benefit from reading this book.

I wish I’d have know Craig’s horsemanship training techniques when I had horses. Would have made training them easier and produced better horses. This is the first book by Craig. He has a new book, Ride Smarter, which goes into more detail. Get them both.

Nice book covers a lot of horse starting situations which I was hoping for. They always say never teach your significant other and this has enough info for my fiance to pick up on so she can help me and feel involved. Disclaimer if you don't know horses no book can teach you work with a person that knows what they're doing. Mr Cameron himself says a green horse and green rider makes black and blue.

It is a great book and one I will use again and again. If I've learned anything... it's that you won't agree with everything any trainer does. But I love the simplicity and structure of this book. I learned many things, things that worked for me and my horse. I went many years without horses and I love the gentleness that has become the new way training and becoming a partner with these very special animals!

Craig Cameroon is a great horseman and this book lays our a very clear path for anyone to do a better job handling their horse. It’s written in a practical, straight forward manner. Even if you have ridden for a while, this book is a great refresher to correct your own bad habits and help your horse.

This book by Craig Cameron gives excellent insight into the charactoristics of the equine and how to adapt to their idiosycrasies.
It's also beautifully illustrated explaining everything a novice needs to know about horseback riding and the challenges that go along with it. I'm sure I'll be referring to it often as I re-educated myself to become a better rider. The only thing better than this book would be getting the information right from the horses, or in this case the horseback rider's mouth, Craig Cameron.

Best book out there for anyone. I first got it when my trainer recommended it. I have been riding all my life and there are some really great working tool information in an easy to read format. I highly recommend this book to all horse owners. I use it to give to new riders so they can understand information that as a long time horse owner and rider I tend to forget when explaining things.

I liked this book. It has great basic horsemanship information from a trusted horseman. I like the side notes as well. Over the
last eighteen months that I've had my QH mare I've gone through three trainers and countless people giving me their opinion about riding and groundwork. This book helps to sift through the good advice from the bad.

This book is logically laid out to take you through horsemanship and training the horse to become a reliable companion, Craig Cameron has gained much popularity over the years for his no nonsense way of training people and horses and since he has won the championship in colt breaking has gained the standing he deserves. For a person wishing to become a better horseman or to take your own horse and do the exercises this book runs though in a detailed photo classes I believe that anyone taking lessons or owning their own horse will benefit.
