NFCT Flagstaff Lake Region: Maine, Rangeley Lake to Spencer Stream (Trail section 9)
This section of the trail follows the Dead River, with the shallow waters of Flagstaff Lake buldging out from the middle and covering three frontier communities that were flooded in Maine's quest for reliable hydro-power. Paddlers on this section will view the Bigelow range which includes many of Maine's highest peaks and where the Appalachian Trail crosses a distant ridge line. A special treat on this section is Grand Falls, a spectacular 30-ft. waterfall (see cover photo of this map) that you'll spend time portaging around.
