Editorial Reviews

Review

Quite literally, Paul Parker wrote the book on free-heel skiing. First published in 1988, Parker's Free-Heel Skiing: Telemark and Parallel Techniques, remains telemark's best substitute and supplement to being introduced to the sport by a friend. (Couloir)

Groundbreaking ... Offers a quiver of highly effective and time-tested instructional tips and lessons brought together to demystify the high art of free-heel fall-line skiing. Any skier-from rank beginner to seasoned vet-will find this book ... a useful and inspirational resource, delivered in a clear, succinct, easy-to-digest style. (
Hooked on the Outdoors)

The indomitable bible for learning telemark skiing…Now in its third edition this book is the perfect resource for telemark skiers of all ability levels. (
Adirondack Sports & Fitness)

"This book and some lessons will be the way to learn what your Swedish grandma knew about the joy of skiing before million-dollar condos and six-pack lifts were invented." (
Los Angeles Daily News)

Free-Heel Skiing has the easy grace of a book that's been getting better for the past 15 years. It is well-organized and brimming with useful suggestions. The illustrations, by Steve McDonald, are outstanding…Parker writes with the intensity of a Zen master…If you're going to own one book on free-heel skiing, then this is the one to own…If you're going to learn from someone, you might as well learn from the best. (
Moscow/Pullman (ID) Daily News)

Few athletes have had the impact on a sport that Paul Parker has had on free-heel skiing ... The book packs at least 10 pounds of instructional advice, equipment recommendations, fitness and training tips, ski history, killer photos, and insightful stories into what is only a one-pound book. (
Skiing magazine)

This book was recommended in Allen & Mikes really cool Telemark tips. Both books are excellent. I would highly recommend for anyone trying to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of the Tele turn.

This is an excellent and ambitious book- assuming the reader has practically no experience, it systematically takes the reader through wedge christies, stem christies, and ends up in the telemark turn. What I find even more appealing, however, is the author's philosophy that he repeats throughout the book- telemark is a TURN, not a sport, and it finds its place among the many other turns in a modern skier's toolbox. He therefore teaches parallel turns as well, which in my mind is a terrific approach. As the author states, and as even the most evangelical telemark skier will admit if pressed, there are situations where the parallel turn is simply more stable and desirable (for example, in icy, hairy terrain), and the versatile skier should be able to move fluidly between techniques as the skiing demands. This idea is integral to Paul Parker's book. I wish more telemark skiers would adopt it.

I give it four stars only because the gear section of the book is substantially outdated, although it's still largely applicable.

If you read this book and put the time on your boards to back it up, you will become a better skier!

Extremely thorough & informative. A great historical look at the evolution of telemark skiing. A good instruction manual that is easy to read.

Great book- clearly explained & illustrated all the steps of learning how to ski, both alpine & telemark techniques.

I'm a long time cross country skier working on improving my downhill technique. I found this book to be well written and somewhat useful, but it's only about skiing on modern downhill-centric "telemark" skis with little camber and loads of sidecut. The techniques are quite different than those used on classic free-heel skis. If you ski on bog-standard free-heel cross-country skis, the instruction in this book isn't very helpful. The author says that cross country skis are too stiff for making turns, and leaves it at that, nevermind all the cross country skiers who turn just fine. There's a big world of freeheel skiing. This book is great within its limited scope, but doesn't cover all that its title suggests.

for a book lost. A need for our telemarking family. Everyone who wants to or does it should have it.
Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2014
This book provides very good technical information for both parallel and telemark parallel skiing. My intention in making this purchase was to look for more advanced instructions on telemarking powder and mogul runs; this instruction didn't start until the end of the book for ~20 pages. Good separate specific content and instructions on telemark skiing crud, powder, piste, moguls, and steeps. One important factor he mentioned was to edge the back ski to initiate turning and avoiding converging skis or slide the back ski out. It would help with an illustration by showing how edging at different times puts the skis at different circles of radius (converging).

The author has provided a very good historical background as well as the basic foundation for both normal skiing and telemark skiing. Paul Parker provides the same instructions as you would get if you were to go take a course on telemark skiing: the most of which is keeping the body quiet and down the fall line, and proper hip alignment vs alpine skiing.
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2006
I am pretty sure a new edition will come out soon, given the rapidity of gear evolution. The basics remain the same --- the technique just gets refined and simplified over time. Except for the telemark technique, this book can be read with profit by any skier, alpine or nordic.

This is unfortunately an outdated book. I should have looked at the publishing date before purchasing it. I got a couple of decent hints from it, at most.
