In this 5th installment of the classic series of mysteries featuring Charlie Chan of the Honolulu Police, we meet Scotland Yard's Inspector Duff, first introduced in Behind That Curtain. Duff is pursuing a callous murderer on an around-the-world tour, and it is only when the ship is docked in Honolulu and Duff is gravely wounded, does Charlie Chan take on the case. This is decidedly unfortunate for the guilty party, because Chan has the culprit well in-hand before the ship makes its final stOut of Print in San Francisco.

Biggers' Gift For Creating Memorable Characters And Plot Twists And Surprises
"CHARLIE CHAN CARRIES ONEarl Derr BiggersReader: Jim ArmstrongUnabridged on Six 90-minute cassettesOf the six Charlie Chan novels Biggers wrote before his untimely death in 1934 at the age of 51, only three were ever filmed:The Black Carmel,Behind That Curtain, andCharlie Chan Carries On.Of these, only this one, starring the Swedish actor, Warner Oland, survived to be transferred to video tape.Chan first appeared on screen in 1926, but didn't make an impression until Oland took over. However, the series didn't hit stride until Key Luke appeared as Number One Son in Charlie Chan In Paris, in 1935.Charlie makes plenty reference to his eleven children in the novels, but only two are named. In this novel they are Rose, the elder daughter who is in college on the Mainland in this story, and Henry, the oldest son, who is granted custody of Charlie's new car while Charlie is off on a Matson liner to San Francisco, solving this case.It is not his case.It begins in London where Inspector Duff of Scotland Yard (introduced in Behind That Curtain) sets out to find the murder of an elderly member of a round-the-world party of American tourists in a London Hotel. He follows them from London to Honolulu, where is attacked and hospitalized. His old friend, Charlie, now Detective Inspector of the Honolulu Police, carries on for him as the party sails for San Francisco - aided and aggravated by the ever over-eager junior detective, Kashimo.BIGGERS' GIFT FOR CREATING MEMORABLE CHARACTERS AND PLOT TWISTS AND SURPRISESis unabated here, which makes it all the more mournful that he did not live to continue the series in book form."[from the back of the cassette case]

Compared with the other entries in the Charlie Chan mystery series, Charlie Chan Carries On is not the strongest; compared with the heap of popular American detective fiction of the past century, it is still pretty darn good, so let's give it an A-.

This is the 5th of the six books in the series, published in 1930. Author Biggers took an artistic risk by starting out with a story that belongs to Scotland Yard Inspector Duff, an old friend of Charlie's. A member of an American-based world tour is found murdered in London. The members are wealthy and well-connected and the Embassy releases Duff's circle of suspects to continue on their way. So, he tries with uneven results to keep up. There are more deaths. When the ship arrives at Honolulu, a good 2/3 of the way through the book, Charlie joins what is left of the touring group for the last leg to San Francisco, to fix what went wrong in the investigation up to that point.

So, not giving us Charlie's company up front was a risk that was okay but not great. The travel group is large and we have to keep up with several names and stereotypical characters--though by the end, we can keep them straight. Typically, Biggers starts with stereotypes but spins them, but not so much here. The tourists are the 1%ers of 1930, apparently untouched by the events of October 1929, about which Charlie makes a passing remark. Biggers also relies on his own formula that always includes a bright ingénue and her suitor. In Behind That Curtain, the ingénue broke gender rules left and right; this is more of a predictable screwball comedy couple. All that said, we still get Charlie in the end, and Biggers slyly reveals the state of his contemporary world as he found it.

The book is the last of six Chan novels written by the very under rated writer Earl Derr Biggers. The book arrived on time and in excellent condition. If you have never read any of the Charlie Chan mysteries PLEASE do not confuse them with the corny movies of the 30's. The mysteries are terrific and entertaining. Chan is a real detective hero

If you are the elderly Mr. Drake, you are a little hard-of-hearing and must carry an ear phone, but that hasn't stopped you from enjoying the first leg of Lofton's round-the-world tour - although the sail across the North Atlantic was a bit choppy and too cold for comfort. Your first stop is London; tonight, you will be sleeping in the old, but classy Broome's Hotel.

Earlier this evening, you supped with your daughter and granddaughter. Unfortunately, your daughter annoys the others on the tour with her hoity-toity airs; alas, one must only address her as Mrs. Potter. On-the-other-hand, your beautiful granddaughter, Pamela Potter, appears quiet popular with the tour's young men.

After dinner, you see Mr. Honywood - he took the tour to calm his nerves, but he is still a nervous-wreck. He asks a favor; you don't hesitate to agree - poor fellow. Just as you about to go to bed, you hear faint sounds coming from the door, you open it, find a hotel staffer pounding on it, he hands you a telegram, you thank him and go to bed. As you drift off, you think about tomorrow ... but unfortunately for you, there will be no tomorrows ...

Too many suspects, misleading clues, and no way to stop the tour; that's Inspector Duff's problem. As the tour continues there are more murders. Duff plans to join them at Honolulu, but when he is nearly murdered, Charlie Chan vows to carry on ...

Overall: Of the Chan's I have just read, 'The House Without a Key' and 'The Black Camel' are better.

Movies based on this book:
'Eran Trece' (in Spanish) in the 'Charlie Chan Collection, Vol. 1'.
'Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise' in the 'Charlie Chan Collection, Vol. 5'.

I have been a fan of Charlie Chan since I saw one of the movies. Back in the late 50's. (I was 10 year's old.)
I happily read all the books. Then we moved and my books didn't make the trip. Imagine how happy I was to find copies of the novels on Better World Books website!!

The 5 books I ordered in the Charlie Chan series arrived in
perfect shape, and I very much enjoy their old fashioned
period style covers. Biggers is such an enjoyable writer,
creating such complete enveloping narratives -character,
landscapes, atmosphere, dialogue, and it all flows seamlessly.

The saying, "Be he ever so humble, there's no police like Holmes," may be extended to include Charlie Chan. Charlie Chan comes to most of us through the dozens of movies featuring him; the books were hard to find except in used book emporiums--but lately, and luckily, the Academy Chicago Publishers has now made all six novels readily available. These splendidly produced books should find a new and pleased audience. As period pieces their entertainment value doubles. I must add that also reading Yunte Huang's fascinating cultural study, CHARLIE CHAN: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE HONORABLE DETECTIVE AND HIS RENDEZVOUS WITH AMERICAN HISTORY, will greatly enhance your reading experience.

A curious note: Chan's creator, Earl Derr Biggers, is barely known. His name isn't blazoned across the cover of any of his books I've seen, included the Academy Chicago Publishers' editions. A self-effacing, modest man it seems.

More Charlie Chan. Amos 'an' Andy bring it on. 0zzy and Harriett why not. It is time that we dump the purist and others who would sweep the files of earlier entertainment clean. If they don't like it Don't Look!

It is very strange if the title-hero of the book makes his first appearance only near the end. And then by his wonderful insight he solves the crime, using only one clue of the first three quarters; the rest became irrelevant. Also it has a bit too many murders before it is resolved; it feels like the author, whenever the narrative was slacking, felt the need to kill another person. I have read only one other Charlie Chan mystery, but that was better.
