This is an outstanding book, one of the best I've read about musical theatre in a long time. It's a very smart, contemporary look at musical theatre, and thankfully, it's NOT one of those insufferable books that thinks musical theatre died in 1964. A really excellent read for anyone who works in or just loves the American musical. As someone who runs a musical theatre company and has written several books on the subject, I can be very picky -- but despite what the one-star review said, this is a GREAT BOOK! (Although, oddly, my copy has a different photo on the cover than the one pictured here...)

I understand the author of this book was dying as he wrote it. I therefore hate to criticise it too severely, but the truth is, it should not have been published. It is full of factual errors, and absurd assertions, that anyone with a reasonable knowledge of musicals will spot quickly.

The editorial standards for books about musicals seem to be extremely low. This is far from the first book on the topic to be riddled with errors. Is it so hard to send a manuscript to someone with the knowledge to fact-check it?
