Focused Genograms: Intergenerational Assessment of Individuals, Couples, and Families First Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
The interpersonal relationships that make up family life are a complex web between many individuals spanning several generations at one time. This web is further complicated by the influence of other factors such as culture and gender. It can be a daunting task for a therapist to unravel this tangle and understand the specific dynamics and individual development within the family. The Multifocused Family Genogram (MFG) is a powerful tool that allows the therapist to record and structure these different elements that make up the family system. By combining the Basic Genogram, the Family Map, and several Focused Genograms, the MFG provides a clear picture of dynamic family history that aids in individual and family assessment.
Focused Genograms provides a thorough account of the use of MFGs in family therapy and practice. The authors present a clinically useful method for collecting the information in key areas of individual and family functioning needed to create Focused Genograms. In addition, the authors carefully explain the diagnostic use and therapeutic applications of this tool. The book is supplemented by extensive examples of Focused Genograms, Family Maps, and Time Lines used in MFG construction. Suggested readings listed at the close of each chapter provide links between techniques fully described in the book and other therapeutic techniques beyond the scope of this work. A thorough presentation of innovative methods for using Focused Genograms makes this an important text for students of marriage and family therapy, as well as an indispensible resource for professionals.

About the authors
Gerald R. Weeks, Ph.D., ABPP, CST is Professor Emeritus in the Program in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He has been a licensed psychologist, Fellow, Approved-Supervisor, and Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, and is a Diplomate and Senior Examiner of the American Board of Couple and Family Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology. He is also a Certified Sex Therapist and Certified Supervisor of Sex Therapists of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. He has published a widely diverse spectrum of 30 advanced professional texts, including one or more "classic" texts in the fields of individual, sex, marital, and family therapy. His first book, Paradoxical Psychotherapy (with Lou L'Abate, 1982) became a national and international best-selling text and was reprinted in multiple languages. In spite of being a professional book which typically sell 3-5 thousand copies, the text sold over 100,000 copies and was one of the publishers best-sellers for over 5 years. Several of his books are widely used in marriage and family programs in the U.S. and abroad. His Couples in Treatment (with S.Fife, 2013) book is now in its 3rd edition. His co-authored and co-edited Systemic Sex Therapy is now available in a 3rd. edition and he is the major author of the Clinician's Guide to Sex Therapy which is also available in a 3rd edition. These two books won major awards from AASECT. He has also published dozens of scientific papers and book chapters in edited professional books.
In 2009, he received the "Outstanding Contribution the Marriage and Family Therapy" award (the 16th awardee in 60 years) from the American Association of Marriage and Family therapy and the next year was named, "2010 Family Psychologist of the Year" by the Academy of Family Psychology. One of his major contributions to the fields of couple and sex therapy is the development of a new paradigm of psychotherapy known as the Intersystem Approach which was based on a meta-theoretical paper published in 1977. He is also the founder of the Integrative/Systemic/Intersystemic approach to sex therapy. Between 1987 and 2020, he published 9 books and numerous papers and chapters based on this approach. One of the earliest books was titled, Integrating Sex and Marital Therapy (1987), which has lead to many other integrative approaches in the field of sex therapy. He was the first author to write about the integration of couple/marital and sex therapy as well as integrative approaches
in psychotherapy as well.
Dr. Weeks served as Program Director of COAMFTE-accredited programs for 27 years at the Marriage Council of Philadelphia/Division of Family Studies/University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (now Council for Relationship) where marriage therapy was first developed. He founded the Institute for Sex Therapy around 1990 while directing the COAMFTE program at the Marriage Council of Philadelphia. Beginning in 1999, he developed an undergraduate program in Family Studies and a graduate program in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Other accomplishments involve being one of the founders of the field of Family Psychology. He was President of the American Board of Family Psychology for two terms (1986/1987) and wrote the initial document specifying the knowledge base of Family Psychology and the standards for training and Board Certification as a Family Psychologist.
Dr. Weeks has lectured and presented training workshops extensively throughout North American, Australia and Europe on sex and couple therapy. Over the past 40 years, he has practiced, taught, conducted research and supervised individual, sex, couple, and family therapy. He continues to practice, write and lecture nationally and internationally. Additional information can be obtained by googling, "Gerald R. Weeks"
