The Humility of God: A Franciscan Perspective Paperback – January 1, 2006

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 90 ratings

The humility of God is really about God's relationship to the world and God's fidelity to the world, even when everything in the world seems to fail.—from the Introduction

"Here as in her previous work, Sister Ilia builds on her outstanding command of the scholarship about the work of Bonaventure which has developed so remarkably in the twentieth century. Together with this she brings her personal knowledge and experience of contemporary scientific understandings of the cosmos. In a style that is preeminently readable, she offers insights into issues and problems that are widespread in the present period of Christian history. Sister Ilia has taken on these monumental issues and has opened insights, which can be helpful to many who take their Christian faith seriously."—from the Preface by Zachary Hayes, O.F.M.

The Humility of God: A Franciscan Perspective is the first extensive treatment of a Franciscan theology of divine humility. Through the lens of St. Bonaventure's theology, Ilia Delio searches for God today "in a fast-paced, scientific world that in many ways views God as an unnecessary hypothesis." Using Bonaventure's Christ-centered mysticism, Ilia Delio illustrates God's humility and his relationship to the world, while at the same time tackling these tough questions: How can a God of love exist in such a time of turmoil and suffering? How can a well-educated Christian reconcile contemporary science with the central symbols of his or her faith?

I am very grateful that Ilia Delio who I imagine to be a terrific teacher as well as scholar spends her "free" time writing books such as this.
Her understanding and expression of the "Mystery" of the Trinity is as good as it gets! " Incarnation," says Delio, "is about God's involved goodness in creation" and as she says in the book's introduction, " The humility of God is really about God's relationship to the world and God's fidelity to the world, even when everything in the world seems to fail." As indicated in the review of her book, Simply Bonaventure, I am about to purchase to copies of The Humility of God for friends. What better Easter gift!!

A deeply contemplative but scholarly review of the spirituality of Francis and Bonaventure. The author writes fluently out of her own long experience of prayer and meditation, but she defers to the insights of others. This beautifully reflects her subject matter, the deference of God.

More heady than usual for Delio.

Wonderful book about God bends down low to each person in love and suffering. How we can see Christ in people who suffer. People who are broken, the blind, the lame, people who have lost everything. A spiritual time just reading.

If you can get through Sister Ilia Delio, you are very smart indeed. Reading her book is work, for sure, but well worth it for the amazing insights. Would recommend this to a serious, non-orthodox person who is putting some serious thought into his/her spiritual journey. Ilia's writings are profound.

This is a must read for anyone who desires to know the love that God has for us. The image and likeness of God will be found in us when we learn to embrace the humility of God and have the compassion for those who suffer at the hands of the proud.

Ilia Delio is great at explaining what's hard to explain. And just the idea of a God who is humble for us is new for most of us and liberating for all.

It is written by a theologian about a theologian. Some heavy words and concepts. I am a Secular Franciscan with a bachelor's degree and I had trouble in parts.

Ilia Delio is a beautiful soul --- most gifted in her knowledge and understanding of our most humble hearted loving God. For me, living the late years of life, she has opened my heart and my soul to new beautiful gardens of love and of precious insights of the awesome tender humility of God. Her vision and insights into the challenges we experience at this crucial period of the Christian journey amid new scientific, technical and cultural influences are most welcome and joyfully enlightening.
