Subtitled "A Modern-day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman who Bound Them Together", this 2006 book is a true story.

Set in the deep south, Denver Moore, a black man, was born on a plantation in Louisiana in the 1930s and never learned to read or write. Eventually, he left his squalid life and moved to Texas where he was homeless for many years and even spent some years in jail. In his 60s he went to the local mission for homeless people. It was there that he met Ron and Debbie Hall, white upscale volunteers who befriended him and changed his life.

This is a true story, told in alternating chapters by Ron (the international art dealer) and Denver (the former homeless person). Unfortunately, Ron's wife Debbie has passed away but it was actually through her inspiration and work with the homeless that this story could be told.

I enjoyed the book. It is truly inspiring although there is a little too much emphasis on religion for my taste. However, this was the truth as the writers saw it and I was able to relate to them in spite of this. This is definitely a good story, well told, and the message is positive.

This book poignantly illustrates the idiom "There but for the grace of God go I." We are all children of God but our life circumstances, our station in life, as it is sometimes referred to, truly do affect how we are perceived and how our lives play out. The coauthors of this compelling commentary clearly illustrate what it is like to be born and raised on different sides of the fence. That they are able to rise above their preconceived ideas about each other and form a powerful and abiding friendship, helping others in the process, is a beautiful story of God's grace and present day miracles. A good book for a study group or Christian book club.

If you like true stories about homeless people and the people who care for them and treat them as regular people, in fact, develop friendships with them, you'll really like this book! This is a very hopeful story about Denver and Ron. Ron's wife's admirable struggle with cancer made the book hard to put down.

I ordered this book and the follow-up book "What Difference Do it Make" from Amazon. They arrived within just a few days and I devoured them immediately. Wish these guys would write another book -- maybe they will. They have a web site and you can order
Denver's note cards with his art work on them and other items.

So wretchedly honest and emotional read!! My father was a sharecropper so I can relate to some of Denver's pain minus the homeless part. My mother worked did day work for a wonderful white lady with a heart of love. Her love for my Mom and her children made it possible for us to go to college. I am a product of segregation and there a many good folks who know the love of God and have compassion to make the world a better place. We never know the paths our lives will lead us or the unlikely person(s) that will make a difference. I read the book on E-book, but I will purchase hard copy for my personal library .

I feel a little torn over this book. Overall it was a really good book. I absolutely loved Denver's story from start to finish, made all the better since it's completely true. I found Denver to be totally authentic. His joy and his pain lifted right off the page and grabbed a hold of me. Though he asks for no pity, you can't help feeling sorry for the bad hand he has been dealt. In the end this serves to magnify Denver's triumphs over all the adversity that he has faced throughout his life.

For as much as I liked Denver and his story, I just couldn't get behind Ron. It seemed like everything he did was a mere attempt to win brownie points with his wife and up his image. I recognize that many will feel differently from me but I found Ron to be overly preachy. His relationship with God became almost over-the-top by the end and I just didn't buy it. (Side note - this book was produced by the world's largest Christian book publisher, which explains the strong themes of religion throughout the book.)

The story itself merits credit, so by all means go ahead and read this book.

This is a great book! Whether Denver is speaking or Ron, you become a witness to their lives and feel as though you are right beside them. Denver's life as a child and young man was tragic but, since it was all he knew, he never complained. It's very sad to think there are still people living in America who are literally, dirt poor. Denver's faith is inspiring and unwavering. I would recommend this book to everyone of all ages.

I just re-read this book for the second time. I forgot what a beautiful story it is. I had a tissue box near me for a good part of the story.

This is became my all time favorite book. I read it in August of 2012 when we were on vacation in Hilton Head. I have never been so moved by a book in my life and knowing that this is a true story makes it that much more compelling. If you have wondered about your faith and if there is a higher being this will answer that question but not in a shove it down your throat kind of way. I was able to relate to the main character as he really didn't have that faith that his wife did and was questioning it. Best book every. You won't be able to put it down.

Pacy start, began to slow, turned into utter drivel half-way through. By the end of the book I was bored witless. Sheer unadulterated, self-serving, self-pitying drivel. I put it through the shredder when finished to prevent the possible suffering of others.
