My 6-year old son is very passionate about his new hobby of fishing so he loves anything having to do with it. I saw this book and thought he might like it, which he did. Plus, we live in Hawaii and I like to buy children's books about Hawaiian themes, and I also like the legend about how the Hawaiian islands were formed. Based on these reasons, I bought this book and overall I'm happy with it. My children all enjoyed reading it and thought the pictures were beautiful. My only complaint (but it was enough to affect the rating) is that the author called all 4 of the brothers by the first name of Maui with their second name following Maui. Not only would this be quite confusing to children, but it's a mouthful to read. It's hard to keep each character straight if they all have the same first name. Whether these are the correct names of the 4 brothers is besides the point to me. For a children's book, this is too confusing. When I read this book out loud to my children, I ended up just reading the second names of each brother, except for calling the legendary Maui by the name Maui. If correctness is an issue with the names, this could be addressed by including an explanation of their full names in an author's note or something at the end.

I enjoyed this story growing up, but not as much as How Maui Slowed the Sun. I have bought both stories for my children, both of which they enjoy.
This is a fun book in which you get see how tricky Maui can be. The only problem with it is, if you aren't used to the Hawaiian language, you might have some difficulty with some of the names. Other than that, it's a fun book to read.
