You may never know whether they chose you because you are a member of the clergy, a professor, a nurse, or somebody who reminds them of a favorite relative. Human woe turns, as flowers do to the spring sun, to those nearby who seem capable of offering some understanding and good sense. The first murmurs of emotional pain, often disguised but ever recognizable, are almost always whispered first to such ordinary people.
If such nonprofessionals are the primary resource for our everyday troubles, what can they do to prepare themselves better to respond in such unpredictable circumstances? How can they, without extensive training, improve their ability to tap into the energy of their common sense and human understanding in order to respond effectively to those who come for assistance?

Kennedy and Charles write in a way that is easily readable for anyone - not just graduate or doctoral students - or in other words, their target audience of nonprofessional counselors. Who are these people? They are hairdressers, bartenders, pastors, managers, teachers, beauticians, supervisors. In reality, they are the people others turn to when they need advice or assistance. Kennedy & Charles expand on this:
"A lack of professional training does not make them unfit or unable to respond effectively to the anxious and troubled people who turn to them for assistance. Graduate schools do not offer credit for the common sense that is the not uncommon characteristic of those whose human credentials are bestowed invisibly on them by the needy people who intuitively come to them with their troubles" (Kennedy & Charles, p. 7-8).
The book is divided into four parts. Part One discusses ethics; emotional involvement; how others affect us; and friendship versus counseling. Part Two discusses the act of listening to others; knowing referral sources; and how to confront discrepancies while maintaining empathy. An important section of Part Two is knowing when to refer someone to a professional.
Part Three begins to cover specific circumstances such as working with families; substance abusers; working with people who experience depression, stress, anxiety; and ends with a brief overview of diagnosing. In my opinion, the latter part is probably a bit more than a nonprofessional counselor needs as it can lead to a tendency of jumping to diagnose rather than bearing witnesses and assisting.
Part Four covers marriage counseling; people with sexual problems; people suffering with HIV/AIDS; suicide prevention; grief and loss; and dealing with emergencies. The last chapter in Part Four is one of the most vital as it discusses the important role of taking counsel with ourselves.
This book is not intended to replace professional counselors. It simply offers tools for nonprofessional counselors to respond to others problems with knowledge and compassion.
Although I am now pursing a career in professional counseling, this book specifically designed for nonprofessional counselors is one that I have returned to again and again.
