This was the first book I read that set me upon the road to the counseling profession. The version I read was the 2nd and was published in 1990 and I read it while serving in the U.S. Navy. The 3rd edition was released in 2001 and added several new chapters.

Kennedy and Charles write in a way that is easily readable for anyone - not just graduate or doctoral students - or in other words, their target audience of nonprofessional counselors. Who are these people? They are hairdressers, bartenders, pastors, managers, teachers, beauticians, supervisors. In reality, they are the people others turn to when they need advice or assistance. Kennedy & Charles expand on this:

"A lack of professional training does not make them unfit or unable to respond effectively to the anxious and troubled people who turn to them for assistance. Graduate schools do not offer credit for the common sense that is the not uncommon characteristic of those whose human credentials are bestowed invisibly on them by the needy people who intuitively come to them with their troubles" (Kennedy & Charles, p. 7-8).

The book is divided into four parts. Part One discusses ethics; emotional involvement; how others affect us; and friendship versus counseling. Part Two discusses the act of listening to others; knowing referral sources; and how to confront discrepancies while maintaining empathy. An important section of Part Two is knowing when to refer someone to a professional.

Part Three begins to cover specific circumstances such as working with families; substance abusers; working with people who experience depression, stress, anxiety; and ends with a brief overview of diagnosing. In my opinion, the latter part is probably a bit more than a nonprofessional counselor needs as it can lead to a tendency of jumping to diagnose rather than bearing witnesses and assisting.

Part Four covers marriage counseling; people with sexual problems; people suffering with HIV/AIDS; suicide prevention; grief and loss; and dealing with emergencies. The last chapter in Part Four is one of the most vital as it discusses the important role of taking counsel with ourselves.

This book is not intended to replace professional counselors. It simply offers tools for nonprofessional counselors to respond to others problems with knowledge and compassion.

Although I am now pursing a career in professional counseling, this book specifically designed for nonprofessional counselors is one that I have returned to again and again.

I am a social worker and have been working in the field of child welfare, principally child abuse and neglect, for twenty years. I was transitioning from another career without the inconvenience of a formal college degree. This is the first book I read twenty years ago and I decided to read it again when I saw that there was an updated version. Reading this book again, now with the perspective of a bona fide professional, reinforces for me what a great resource this book it. It is an excellent book to read for those who find themselves in some sort of counseling or helping profession or role. It offers practical advice that is easy to understand and apply. Now after twenty years in a helping profession, I see the benefit for the professional as well. Too often professionals forget some common sense, practical things and this book has been a wonderful resource for me. Actually, I would recommend, and have, this book to anyone. We all find ourselves in relationship with people who need the comforting, supportive, and helpful presence of another.

The unusual thing about this book is its premise, which differs so much from what we hear from the medical community: that lay persons are often called upon more than professionals to counsel and advise others, and that they (we) are uniquely equipped to do so. This is a book for people who do not have professional training as a counselor or therapist, yet who are called upon by virtue of their other roles in life-- pastor, teacher, coach, bartender, or in my case, herbalist and Tarot Therapist-- to help people who are going through hard times or dealing with difficult issues. The book makes it clear that the role of such persons is not to lay bare the hidden depths of the unconscious, but to be a support. Different types of people who might come our way, the unique challenges they bring, and much useful information on how to handle difficult situations in counseling are described. I find this an incredibly helpful book.

This book is excellent for lay people who want to be a good advisor to friends and family, or educated professionals who need a reference. The book goes in depth to make the reader confident enough to offer sound advice as well as develop their listening skills. Complicated topics like HIV/AIDS are discussed, as are personality disorders and other mental illness issues. The book provides an excellent base to make a helper useful, but also recognizes limitations and when to consult a knowledgeable professional. When I was looking for a book to help me re-develop my counseling skills, this book was by far the best resource.

This is a wonderful text -- well written -- for nonprofessional people. I've used this in training sessions for those who provide emotional support to people. The participants have found the insights and guidance provided in the book to be extremely valuable.

I needed this book for a class. I don't love the book. It isn't as easy to read as I think that it could be or as I was expecting it to be. But I was happy to actually recieve the book that I needed after going through a hassle with Indigo/Chapters and getting the wrong book (used) but not being able to return it. I'm sticking with Amazon from now on.
