One of the most highly acclaimed resources for the study of ear training in music education today

Solfege has become one of the most highly acclaimed resources for the study of ear training in music education today. This revised and expanded third edition includes a multitude of new musical examples and dictations covering the entire continuum of musical development from classical to modern. For the first time, Solfège also includes definitive audio performances on CD of each of the 51 musical dictations, keyed by track number to the musical notation in the text. As students progress from the simple to the complex by following these carefully interrelated lessons, the results are, according to Mel Powell, “akin to miracle-making.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Marta Árkossy Ghezzo's well-written and highly-organized volume presents a comprehensive system of interrelated musical disciplines intended to aid in the acquisition of general musical skills. Useful as a classroom text, it has considerable value as an academic reference work in music because of the number of excellent musical examples that illustrate tonal, chromatic, modal, and atonal systems, and because of an extensive series of graphic symbols frequently encountered in the notation of aleatory music.”
CHOICE

“Solfège is unique because of its extent and ingenuity. Dr. Ghezzo has integrated into her system all the essential information necessary for a student to become a professional musician.”
—Dr. Vladimir Scolnic, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, Israel

“The greatest strength of this book lies in the structure it provides for ear training studies, incorporating various musical styles from classical to modern, as well as world ethnic areas. The book is an essential resource that emphasizes the best educational skills towards the study of musicianship, ear training, and sight singing.”
—Professor Doo-jin Ahn, Hanseo University, Seoul, Korea

“The manner of presentation and organization as well as the quality of the original music used and of the exercises is . . . revolutionary.”
—Professor Alexandru Hrisanide, Conservatory of Music, Holland

“It is sufficient to glance through a few lessons of this book to be immediately convinced of a real sense of enrichment in the teaching of the theoretical, practical, and analytical basics of music.”
—Professor Paolo Musmeci, Conservatory of Music “Giuseppe Verdi,” Milan

Recommended by my professor the textbook arrived wrapped and excellent condition. An extra bonus is that it came with a cd. For what I have read so far, the book appears to be really In depth.

I'll admit it wasn't very good, and that I can't do it with rhythm yet, but I was sight singing basic exercises within an hour. Considering that yesterday I thought solfeggi would take years of training to become halfway decent, I'd say I'm impressed. Unfortunately, I accidentally bought the second edition instead of the third, so if you buy the third edition it will probably be even better. However, the third edition is $40ish, I bought mine used (but in great condition) for $8 plus shipping, so, not a bad deal at all. I will (try to remember to) update this review after I have finished the book with a much more comprehensive look at the instruction past lesson 2. Also, I'm teaching myself with this book, I think if you are planning on doing the same thing, spring for the third edition because there are some parts of mine where you need a pianist (other than yourself, if you play piano) to complete the exercises and the third edition has recordings on a CD to fill that gap if you plan on doing this alone. I have not tried any other books or had any teachers with this, so I have no other experiences with solfege to compare this to. I plan on taking an advanced chorus class (in which I will learn more intricate sight singing) next year but I need to audition for it and to audition I need to have basic sight singing skills.

I am a music education major at Florida Christian College...I purchased this book because my teacher switched over to it in the middle of the semester even though we were originally using a different sight singing and ear training book. The director of our music department who is a Julliard School of Music graduate recommended the change. The main reason being that the lessons in the book are so well structured were you get a ear training, rhythm, dictation, and music theory in a progressive fashion in every lesson. It's helping me a whole lot because I started working on my theory really late in life... so this book is perfect for a person like me who is not so good on sight singing and ear training but needs to get up to speed in a relatively short period of time. Again, "if you stick to it", due to the well thought out structure of this book anyone can learn how to sight sing and ear train a whole lot faster. As a result I am now enjoying my "Sight Singing Ear Training" class a whole lot more.

I ordered this book as a review for myself, and as a guide to me in my private music teaching, about what to introduce to my students and in what order. It has certainly met and exceeded my expectations, and we have not been through it entirely. Good thick book. The theory stuff is in the right order and is clearly explained, clear enough even for children I think, with some help. The dictation is more challenging, earlier on than I expected; but it's good stuff and a fair challenge. I'll want to add, I think, my own assignments about hand-written music manuscript; I still think it's important despite all the pretty good music notation programs.

I don't know how widely this book is used in college theory classes, and I'd like to know what's used most often if there is a favorite. But if I were in that business, this books would do for me.

Good book for Solfegio teachers. Would be hard for people, who wants to study Solfegio alone, because it requires assistance when it comes to exercise and dictation. I agree, that it is a "Comprehensive Course".

ONE OF THE WORST BOOKS ON SUPPOSEDLY SOLFEGE! NOT FOR BEGINNERS. DIDACTION IS WAY OFF! NON SEQUITOR. VERY DISAPPOINTED!
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2004
This book isn't aimed at teaching music theory. Is about learning to sight sing and acquiring all the skills associated with that (pitch recognition, music dictation, etc.). The step by step approach is systematic. It starts with recognising and singing simple patterns first in major then in minor keys. The recognition of pitch is covered in tandem with learning to cope with increasingly complex rhythms. I've tried a few books and I find that the approached used here is the most intuitive I've come across. It's possible that different systems appeal to different people. I'm a choral singer with a basic grounding in music theory but my sight singing skills were poor. I don't think you need much music expertise to use this book other than the ability to read notes and key signatures. Ideally I would like to see this published in a workbook format (instead of a hard bound book) which could be left open easily on a music stand or at the piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for vocal teachers and students alike.

Tonic Solfa or Solfeğe as is one of the respected and time tested Western methods and systems of teaching singing, sight reading/sight reading, aural or ear training and also music theory. Almost all the top music colleges and institutes of music the world over have their students take up Solfeğe as a compulsory paper. This book on its own is quite comprehensive but there are a few things that will seem odd or rather lacking for the Solfeğe purist.

1. It doesn't not delve deeply into the Solfeğe system itself. It rather makes Solfeğe a sort of an introductory aid into Western Music notation and theory. So for those looking to compose a song entirely in Solfeğe complete with its own unique set of symbols, this might not be an excellent source.

2. There is not much in terms of composition, say like composing for a choir or a four part or a six part choral group. There are other excellent books which deal with this more in depth.

3. The book is deeply steeped in Western music theory and also has lots of singing exercises and pieces. Like I stated in point no. 2, this book is not geared towards a composer per se but rather serves to give one a thorough understanding of music theory esp. Vocal music theory and to develop one's voice and the ability to sing and to excel at that.

All in all, its an excellent book but to be well rounded in terms of composition and arranging for a choir etc, I would suggest getting other books as a supplement to this.
