A Critical Introduction to Queer Theory unknown Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Explores the ways in which sexuality, subjectivity and sociality have been discursively produced in various historical and cultural contexts
The book begins by putting gay and lesbian sexuality and politics in historical context and demonstrates how and why queer theory emerged in the West in the late twentieth century. Sullivan goes on to provide a detailed overview of the complex ways in which queer theory has been employed, covering a diversity of key topics including: race, sadomasochism, straight sex, fetishism, community, popular culture, transgender, and performativity. Each chapter focuses on a distinct issue or topic, provides a critical analysis of the specific ways in which it has been responded to by critics (including Freud, Foucault, Derrida, Judith Butler, Jean-Luc Nancy, Adrienne Rich and Laura Mulvey), introduces key terms, and uses contemporary cinematic texts as examples.

"This book is a succinct, pedagogically designed introduction. As classroom text, Sullivan's work is heady with vibrant debate and slim heuristics; her intellectual clarity is stunning." ― Choice

I think you can get a good idea of the content if you 'click to look inside' above, and go to the contents page, but I will give a brief overview of what I found interesting about this book.
First, it explores historical notions of non-normative (or queer) sexuality and the development of the political problems such categorisations faced (and continue to face). Should homosexuality be considered pathological? Should non-heterosexuals assimilate themselves into pre-existing heterosexual frameworks? What is the intersection between race and sexuality/racism and homophobia? Is transgenderism subversive or heteronormative? Are non-normative sexual practices perverse or liberating and what is the boundary? Can heterosexuality be 'queer'? Some of these questions may seem to have obvious answers but Sullivan roots them in their historical context and gives fair accounts of the different aspects of the various debates.
Second, Sullivan includes the ideas of various prominent thinkers into these debates where it is relevant, thinkers such as Judith Butler, Michel Foucault and Sigmund Freud. As such it acts as a great springboard to exploring other texts and thinkers, which are arguably themselves countable amongst the aforementioned 'impenetrable' thinkers.
Third, Sullivan's work is firmly grounded in contemporary issues and she makes reference to a number of films and documentaries, which not only added to my own bucket list but really makes the text relevant and prompts the reader to be more critical about contemporary popular culture. As such, queer theory proves to be an engaged and relevant discipline, not the kind of obscure academic theorising that it perhaps has a reputation for.
