A unique introduction to sexual and gender identity and queer studies

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people are becoming more and more visible in all aspects of American culture, from party politics to MTV videos.

Despite the recent queer publishing explosion, few texts cover a broad range of topics around sexual and gender identities. Most existing works are high-level theory books, texts focused upon specific disciplines or topics, or practical guides aimed primarily at a heterosexual audience or people just beginning to come out. There has been to date no general, accessible, and inclusive work suitable for use as an introduction to Queer Studies.

In this collection, contributors assess the conflict between postmodernism and identity, the concept which typically serves as a linchpin for social and political organizing. Others address queer theory, looking specifically at how we define it, how it informs political activism, and how we can theorize such aspects of sexual performance/behaviors as s/m or butch-femme relationships.

The volume contains contributions from both established and newly emerging Queer Studies scholars, including Amber Ault, M. V. Lee Badgett, Warren J. Blumenfeld, Gregory Conerly, Patricia L. Duncan, Ruth Goldman, Lynda Goldstein, Sherrie A. Inness, Christopher James, Amanda Udis-Kessler, JeeYeun Lee, Michele E. Lloyd, Tracy D. Morgan, Ki Namaste, Vernon Rosario II, Paula Rust, and Siobhan Somerville.

"A thoroughly engaging look at American culture ... Cullen's articulate prose is spiced with wicked wit and he loves a good story ... Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of complex cultural forces."---Publishers Weekly,

"An exceptionally well-written and engrossing introduction to the nonelitist art forms of American popular culture ... Highly recommended."--, -Library Journal, starred review

"Cullen's strength comes from his understanding of how the different strands of American society intertwine in imaginative, unpredictable ways ... The shape and vitality of pop culture's next era will depend, at least in part, on commentators like Cullen."---Washington Post Book World,

"Reflecting both the strengths and weaknesses of an unusually dynamic area of historical scholarship, The Art of Democracy is one of the best surveys of the history of American popular culture."-Journal of American History,

This is an awesome compendium of essays surrounding the Queer theme. Even though the theory itself is not formal nor specific, this book successfully accomplishes its proposal, offering important discussion about the meaning and the gaps one might find in Queer Theory.

I had to have this book for a class (last min.) it came very fast and is in very good shape.

Twenty academics with some variation of sex and/or gender
explore the many dimensions of these variations.
They are all sympathetic to GBLTs.
But none of these essays attempts to explain the phenomena.
Rather, the book is more political, attempting to deal with
social oppression based on variations of sex and gender.

There is deep concern about the best concepts for each variation,
for example how different racial and ethnic groups deal with lesbianism.

There is no discussion of the sexuality
of people who have variations of sex and gender.
That is all left implicit and understood
--perhaps because the authors assume that the only readers
will be people who already understand everything
about their variant sexual feelings and behavior.
If all the readers are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender,
they need no exploration of these phenomena.
Rather, they need to work on their common oppression.

There is some discussion of the disputes
within the collection of all people
who have some variation of sex and/or gender,
for example conflicts between lesbian and bisexual women.
Each sub-group claims to be
more marginalized and erased than the others.

This anthology gives a few glimpses into the minds of
college professors who participate in the various communities
of people who have some variation of sex and/or gender.
But it adds little to the understanding of the phenomena.
