All women from Appalachia. I knew and had read several but what surprised me most was the vivid poetry. Loved learning of these often over looked women.

If you are a serious student or aficionado of appalachian literature, this is a must have. Listen Here is an anthology of excerpts from 105 women authors "whose lives have been marked by life in the Appalachian mountains" (from the introduction). The anthology includes works ranging from 1826-2002. There are two reasons to buy this book. First, if you are a lit teacher,it will introduce your students to an amazing breadth of appalachian writers and their very good writing. It is an excellent companion to full-length works to expand your students' exposure. Second, it gives you just enough from each author to let you know whether you want to read the complete work. And there will be several full length works you will want to find and read!

In my opinion the best anthology of women writers in the Appalachian region. This sits lovingly above my desk in my home office.

Not in “good condition” as described; stains on several pages, spine very tilted and extremely creased.

For students and devotees of Appalachian literature, this book, along with BLOODROOT, should be required reading. Not only is it enjoyable reading, it guides the reader toward additional Appalachian books to be enjoyed.

It's a fantastic book, filled with great stories and poetry. If you want stories about Appalachia from people who have lived and breathed there, this is perfect.

I discovered "Listen Here" while browsing with girlfriends in a bookstore in Spruce Pine, N.C. this past weekend. I was completely charmed by the book's contents. So much so, that while I and my four friends ran errands around town,I read selections from the book from the backseat of the car. We laughed and cried over the things I read, identifying so well with the stories, feelings and images of women's everyday lives which are so eloquently depicted in "Listen Here." This is a wonderful addition to any library of fine, deeply-felt writing. Men will enjoy it; women will celebrate it.
I am in the process of publishing my own book and hope that it will touch readers the way this book has touched me. Congratulations to Sandra Ballard and Patricia Hudson - you've produced a masterpiece. That's all I have to say before the season starts - a line which will make sense to you if you read "Listen Here."
