Review

Probably the best one-volume English language summary of Jung's thought. . . Stein develops the cartographical metaphor of the title by beginning with the "surface" (ego) of the psyche and exploring successively more complex areas, including complexes, libido thoery, shadow, "anima/us," the self, individuation, and synchronicity. The map soon resembles the multidisciplinary chart of a solar system more than it does a flat map. In each subject area, Stein draws heavily on papers that Jung wrote late in his life, but he sets these in the context of Jung's earlier developing thought. This method allows the author to demonstrate the interconnectedness and coherence of Jung's mature work. -- Choice, 10/15/98

Stein could just as aptly have named his introductory guide "Jung's Art of the Soul," for the course the founder of analytical psychology charted also has the intuitive sweep of an artist on an inner journey integrated within a systematic framework of techniques. Though acknowledging Jung's creative, intuitive approach to fathoming the mysteries of the individual and collective human psyche, the author presents a solid case for the basic coherency and empirical underpinnings of the great psychoanalyst's theory-counter to those who viewed him as more of a mystic or philosopher who espoused: "As within, so without." Territory consciously omitted from this psychic map concern his analytic practice and interpretation of culture, history, and religion. Organized like a graduate thesis, all the major concepts that evolved over Jung's lengthy career are lucidly summarized with some contextual details: ego-consciousness, complexes, libido theory, archetypes, persona/shadow, anima/animus, the self, individuation, and synchronicity. While this presentation is eminently more accessible than most Jungian texts-and Stein does preface it with personal remarks about his long-time attraction to Jung-those who seek a sense of Jung's own voice and personal development in his quest for answers to many of life's enigmas will have their appetites whet to explore further. --

Very helpful introduction to many of Jung'd ideas. Very helpful to understand certain terminology before embarking on the journey of reading Jung himself.

I covered much of this in university psychology class years ago, so decided to recently reread it again. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, since the chapters are reasonably concise. Jung's theories can be incredibly difficult and complex, yet they are presented in an understandable manner in this text. The theories that inspired my thinking and changed my understanding of the world back in university still stand up for me today. I am glad I went through this again. I highly recommend this as a wonderful starting point to the thoughts and beliefs of Jung.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it was my introduction to Jung. The chapters are accessible and reasonably concise. Jung's theories can be incredibly dense, and yet they are presented in an understandable manner here. I don't necessarily agree with all of Jung's ideas, but his thought has deeply inspired my thinking and changed my understanding of the world. I highly recommend this as an introduction that provides a comprehensive overview of Jungian theory, and so is an excellent starting point to help you understand his often difficult works.

This is a nice overview of the key features of Jung’s thought. Stein lays the groundwork for digging more deeply into the Jungian view of personhood accessibly. Stein does a good job distinguishing frequently used terms like “constellating” and terms that in more common parlance seem to mean one thing, but are used differently by Jung, such as “ego” and “self.”

I purchased both the kindle and the audible versions. The reader on the audible production is not the best. He reads a tad too fast (such that slowing down the narration on the Kindle Fire is too slow and normal speed too fast) and tends to end each sentence on an upward inflection. This gives the narrated version of the book a kind of continuous sense of urgency that does not lend itself to contemplation.

The kindle version of the text is fine. While I didn’t find the illustrations toward the end of the text particularly explanatory, at least they showed up well on the device, unlike the way illustrations sometimes are frustratingly produced in kindle versions. I appreciated that.

A ludid dreamer returning to a Familiar dark valley surrounded by blooding mountains and errie shadows would i suspect benefit enormously from the chance discovery of a map showing a way out of the labyrinth. Such night walkers as jung and the buddha represent the best articulation of the minds capacity to liberate itself from its own compelling apparency.....ther only question or doubt i have is if one can settle for anothers version of what liberaration is. i loved the synchronicity chapters. The secret acasual relationship that exist between the perceptual cracks of apparent perceptual reality. The mind i suspects represents our darkest dreams and so yes it seems pretty amazing to discover that one can actually live a lucid life of infginite possibilities....I am a myselof one of the invisible people, uneducated and in articulate. Word unlike true meaning or feeling are such juggled things. As far as maps go this is a beauty and would seem to lead to some possibility of inner light or freedom... be happyv its not as bad as it looks orn feels.

I like the authors writing style. It takes a heavy subject and explains it clearly. One could stop with this book and have a good understanding of the complexity of the Psyce to understand oneself and others. Or, like me it excites one to read deeper and further Jungs works directly.

I heard about this book from a YouTuber and by the time the video was done, I had already ordered it online. Not disappointed. I very much like how it represents a comprehensive view of all of Jung's main works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un libro espléndido

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for new Jung readers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2023
I was recommended this book as a good introduction to Jung's writings and found it to be a very interesting and well-paced summary of his collective works. I feel like this is a great book to read and then pick out which of Jung's concepts you would like to dive into more specifically without needing to dig through the somewhat expensive books in a trial and error fashion.
