Pop Fleyes: Bob Popovics's Approach to Saltwater Fly Design Hardcover – December 1, 2000

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 101 ratings

  • "The most innovative fly tier I have ever known." --Lefty Kreh on Bob Popovics
  • "Bob Popovics has brought more creative ideas to the table in the last two decades than any other tier out there." --Dan Blanton

This is the first and only book available on the tier whose techniques with epoxy and silicone revolutionized saltwater fly tying. The family of flies Bob Popovics developed over the last three decades (dubbed "Pop Fleyes," a spelling that incorporates part of his last name with the fact that eyes are a prominent feature in their design) have proven devastatingly effective for stripers, bluefish, false albacore, and many more species. This book goes beyond the basic recipe format to provide the thinking behind Popovics's pattern development, a guide to key tying techniques, and detailed notes on how to fish Pop Fleyes most effectively.

If there is a must read fly tying book for 2014 , this is it ; except that I would extend that to include recent years and probably a few more years to come as well . Popovics and Jaworowski are iconic names in fly tying and fly fishing , so it comes as no surprise that this new volume would be a winner . I have bookshelves full of fly fishing and fly tying books , and this one outshines them all in one or more ways .

It goes beyond the "recipe" of how to tie a particular pattern , although that info is included , well presented and outstandingly well illustrated ; to include the design logic which resulted in their creation of the pattern . And creative these two gentlemen are , not the kind of "pretty to look at , but I wonder if that would catch fish" type of creativity ; but innovation based on trial and error , fine tuning and adjustment , and lots of fishing experience using these patterns and others .

Unlike some other books , the text is not peppered with self-serving claims and promotion . These guys are humble , and generous with their knowledge . Like most fly tiers , I have learned a lot from online patterns and youtube videos ; but like a lot of online content , the quality varies enormously and there's often a sales pitch buried in there somewhere .

This book proves there is still a very valid , relevant , useful place for well-designed and thoughtfully written books on fly tying . There is a lot of learning contained in this book , even for folks like me who've been tying flies for many years . At the same time , it's clear and accessible even to the novice tier . It's got tips and patterns useful for both fresh and saltwater fly fishing .

Outstanding !

Unlike many fly tying books, this one does much more than provide recipes and a picture of the finished fly. This book provides well illustrated step-by-step instructions and lots of photos for tying many of Bob Popovics key patterns. It also provides helpful tips on how to fish the flies. This is a great book for any saltwater fly-tyer's library.

Wow, this book has opened my eyes to good fly design for saltwater and even freshwater. They get into the how's and why's for developed these flies.
They are not for the traditionalist who wants to stay with 'natural materials'. But they attack the problem of fly survival in the harsh
saltwater and hard biting fish.

Since I started reading this book and checking out web sites, I have noticed the book is still behind the trend in what's happening,
only in that it takes time to publish a book while people take it an run with it.

My only complaint it that it talks only about "east coast" when I am on the west coast. But I saw vary similar files for pike fishing
in the lakes with even newer materials addressing things like the epoxy yellowing issue talked about in this book.

I am a returning hobbyist from almost 20 years ago, an still can't get a handle on all of the new materials out there. And this book is a very good
aid in understanding some of this stuff and how to use it.

Well worth the money if you want to expand your knowledge.

Good instructions for tying the flies, and detailed examples of how to use 5 minute epoxy to form them. Recommended for saltwater fly tiers, as well as freshwater tiers that want to explore the use of epoxy.

I know Bob Popovic since a lot of year and follow his fly fishermen and fly tier carrier since a lot of years. I am particularly interesting in trash fly. Fly fishing for every fish as possible, No noble fishes, no limits, Today it is possible to take a lot of pleasure with a fly rod to catch a mako shark on a giant tube fly, A cat fish on a 12 salt water rod and gigantic fly with a palette, take a monstrous pike with a wiggle tailed fly or catching picky chub or carp on nymph. Indeed I love to fish trouts and grayling but sometimes I fly fish in urban environnement for big perches. This is modern fly fishing today. Not limited to fishing Trouts and salmons but every fish. Bob say's how it was difficult to present new tendencies and development of streamer fishing during the 30 last years. Bob is not only a fantastic tier, he is a extraordinary naturalist, beginning to elaborate a pattern in his mind after careful observation of real beat fishes and their behaviour. After he propose a pattern derived of his observation. He is so cautious about some purists, he say's "If you have a problem with using of this (the tails for example, what gives to me this year a pike of 115 cm and more than 10 kilos) of that, don't use it" The book present the result of his more advanced flies using epoxy and silicon (what is marvellous because of his consistency). These flies are realistic and not difficult to tie. ...Big photos of stages explain clearly what you can do to make these fantastic patterns. Small remarks indicate some tricks to improve your technique and the way to use the fly. OUTSTANDING for this price. You can use the Bob's remarks for all fishes you want to catch with "fibers" tried on a hook. Not 5 stars, 10 stars or more if it was possible.
