  • The fishing companion to Tying Small Flies
  • Instructions and illustrations for tricky casts, including pile, reach, parachute, and downstream-and-across reach
  • Techniques for dead-drift nymphing, freestyle nymphing, and fishing dry-fly and in-the-film plus how to fish tiny mayflies, Tricos, Pale Morning Duns, midges, microcaddis, terrestrials

Most small-fly books concentrate on the fly patterns, but presentation and tactics are just as important as the pattern itself. Small-fly fishers must carefully observe the trout and constantly adjust their techniques as they go. Engle covers the difficulty of detecting strikes and how to best play trout caught on small flies and gives advice on the aquatic insect orders and how to fish the hatches, depending on the water and the stage of the hatch. Covered too are special considerations for rods and reels for small-fly fishing and tactics for light tippets. Engle describes fishing specific waters, including tailwaters, freestone rivers, and spring creeks.

I have the companion book Tying Small Flies and I have enjoyed them both. I used to think tying flies smaller than #18 was impossible. Now with the proper tools it's a piece of cake. I like the references to other related books. For example, I picked up a copy of Bob Miller's Trico book and I'm tying wonder wing duns and spinners down to size 26.
I really like the explanation about presentation and being in the zone. Ed Engle says after awhile you develop the "sixth sense" and you know when to strike. I have developed that sense in nymphing and I'll have to put in my time with the small flies.

This is a great reading for those of you who love to fish small streams, through the reading I realize that this is the second book by the author to complement one on tying small flies. You can read this one by its own.
I'm a fly fishing enthusiast who love to fish small streams whit ultra light tackle and his recommendations on tackle doesn't suit what I use, instead you have to focus on the strategies and tactics presented here with an open mind to it.
I've read a lot of books on fly fishing and I was in love on his style of writing and the way it present it to the reader. I don't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone, but if you are an intermediate or advances fly fisher give this book a try.

A really good book about the subject. Could use an update, like more photos instead or along with the drawings. Met the author and he is quite the expert. Enjoyed the book.

Ed Engle has some great tips in this book, and a lot of it seems like "practice makes perfect" and "stick with it long enough, and you may catch some fish." On several occasions while reading the book, I was reminded of my own preference of fishing spots. I tend to fish the more difficult spots that are not as crowded and it seems like Mr. Engle does the same. I will of course have to purchase his other book on tying small flies.
