Purchase options and add-ons

Different people approach the business of praying in different ways. For some it is, quite frankly, an obligation, like paying taxes. For other people prayer is a means of controlling events, and for those concerned with human fulfillment prayer is a way of delving into themselves, achieving self-knowledge.

This book maintains that prayer is first and foremost a personal relationship and that the most fruitful prayer is that which builds upon and enhances relationship. It shows us how we can develop an intimate relationship with God. It suggests various methods of prayer that will deepen and strengthen our friendship with him.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Drawing on Barry's experience as a Jesuit and a spiritual director, this reflects the Ignatian approach to spirituality, with its active use of imaginative faculties, in contrast, say, to Basil Pennington's method of imageless prayer. Exploring prayer as a conscious, dynamic relationship with God, Barry discusses contemplative approaches to nature and Scripture, emotional self-awareness, and ways of transcending ambivalence or outmoded images of God. Reassuring and easily accessible. EC

I couldn’t be happier with the contents of this book. The author portrays in simple examples from everyday life how we can make our relationship with God more meaningful and closer. Every chapter taught me something in the most easily understood and palatable way. It is a valuable resource for people of all stages of faith formation with ample opportunity for new insights and growth.

"God and You, Prayer as a Personal Relationship" is an amazing little book by William A. Barry, S.J. It is simple, basic, and profound. I read it one chapter at a time, with time to ponder and put into practice what I read. Fr. Barry has written a truly remarkable book that touched me deeply - it would not be exaggerating to say that it was life-changing. I have already given it as a gift. There are many different ways to approach prayer, I feel sure that the reader will connect with at least one of the ways Fr. Barry discusses. Highly recommend!

Teachings on prayer can be a disappointment. Content can be banal and a rehash of things one learned in early childhood. But Wm. Barry builds one idea on top of another till he concludes that when we become mature in our faith our prayers no longer ask God to conform to our wishes but we, because of our developing relationship with God, become more like him.

Easy to read book on the role and importance of Prayer. Barry writes from an Ignatian perspective that all can understand. He offers prayer as a way to deepen a relationship, even a friendship with God.
