Dispelling much of what he terms the 'mythology' of the Scotch-Irish, James Leyburn provides an absorbing account of their heritage. He discusses their life in Scotland, when the essentials of their character and culture were shaped; their removal to Northern Ireland and the action of their residence in that region upon their outlook on life; and their successive migrations to America, where they settled especially in the back-country of Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia, and then after the Revolutionary War were in the van of pioneers to the west.

A most readable contribution to the growing body of sophisticated literature on immigration in the colonial period.

Delivered on time. Book is almost like new.

After reading several histories of the Scotch-Irish (not "Scots-Irish" according to the author) this is the most thorough, lucid and well-researched of the group. It covers their history and character first in Scotland, then in Ulster (Northern Ireland) and finally in the American colonies/USA. I am particularly grateful for the description of their geographic migration within the colonies beginning in early 1700s and progressing ultimately to the newly opened frontier following the completion of the French and Indian War and their assimilation as Americans following the Revolutionary War. It is a great help in understanding my own heritage: VA to NC western territory/eastern TN to IN then IA from mid-1700s to mid-1800s. The author describes the character of the people--sometimes rough and unruly--without disparaging them. That was part of the character that made them effective on the frontier. It's part of what made them such an important part of of our history. [Minor gripe about the Kindle edition: it has a number of spelling errors--none serious--as a result of the imperfect optical character recognition scanning that resulted in this version.]

It was a difficult read but rich in history of the Scots Irish. It got easier to read when they migrated to America.

What a great book! I'm new to this history, and I thought it was very nice to break up the history of the Scotch-Irish into 3 periods: when they were in Scotland a long-long time ago, when they were in Ireland a long time ago, and when they were in America before the Revolution. It really puts into perspective some of the early colonists who settled and then headed "out west" into PA, VA, and the Carolinas. I'm very happy about my purchase.

One thing to note in the Kindle version, there is some amount of scanning issues, where the letters didn't exactly come out perfect. For example, "king" might look like "ling." It was the most distracting towards the middle of the book, but overall it wasn't too bad.

Again, I would definitely recommend this book to someone interested in Scotch-Irish history.

The book really is a scholarly tomb, which I appreciate. But I mostly wanted to address the title and the naysayings of reviewers giving this book low stars for using the terminology "Scotch-Irish." The author goes into quite a bit of detail explaining this name. He delved into the records and cites the first historical usage (a document in Queen Elizabeth's time) and every reference he found later, showing that it is the designation these particular emigrants were named and by which they referred to themselves. They were not known as Scots. Don't be misled by those claiming their historical superiority, denouncing this book based on its title. It's an excellent and definitive work and the author knows his stuff, unlike those disparaging him for the title.

If your doing any research of Scotch-Irish you should get this, very inexpensive and pretty good info loaded on this CD.

Excellent book that de-romanticizes our modern notions of what the Scottish people were like back in the day. They were poor as poor could be, utterly lawless, they never wore kilts because no one could afford fabric, let alone shoes. Property rights were completely foreign to them-if you could take it, then it was yours.

That said, the author does an amazing job of showing the true character traits of the Scotts Irish that enabled them to survive in the new world and contribute so greatly to the American Revolution.

An awesome piece of scholarship and thoroughly readable.

Please note I bought and have read the entire book. Some reviews here want to appear bright by bashing the fact that Professor Leyburn used the term "Scotch-Irish" rather than "Scots-Irish". The book was written in 1961, when the latter term was not as much "in vogue" as today. Rest assured this in no way detracts from the accuracy of the book. This is a scholarly, fair account of the Scots-Irish from their life as lowland Scots, their migration to Ulster, and subsequent migration to America. It avoids and tempers much of the "Scots-Irish centric" tone of many other treatments of the subject. And, please do a Wikipedia search of "Scots-Irish" if you think it's the only, 100% correct way to refer to "us".
